Whimsical Retro Christmas Playroom

A big thanks to Kirkland’s for partnering with me on this post.   As always, all content and opinions are 100% my own.

It’s official.  We have a holly jolly playroom in our house.  I mean really jolly. Suuuper jolly.  More color than I have ever used in our Christmas decorating.  To deck the halls… uh plank wall… in here, I went all whimsical crazy with some of Kirkland’s retro decor from their Christmasland line.

Olivia and Robert are beside themselves with excitement.  This room has been the wild card ever since we finished it a few weeks ago, so different from the other rooms in our house but that’s the best part!

My photos really don’t do it justice for how glowy and twinkly it is in person. (Is glowy a word?  It is now.)

It’s like Dr. Seuss, Joanna Gaines, and Ralphie from a Christmas Story all threw a party in here.  That’s the only way I can describe it.

I had these miniature trees already in my stash that worked perfectly in here just by adding a few colorful mini ornaments.

And I took down our adventure sign temporarily and replaced it with this wooden retro noel banner for something more festive.

My absolute favorite is this flocked pre-lit garland with all of these bright ornaments on it.  I had no idea some of the ornaments were mercury glass until it arrived, and they’re beautiful!  I think they add the perfect hint of vintage to it.

I stuck this sweet red truck on one of the shelves and the headlights even light up!  Olivia is always begging me to play with it. So most of the time it’s being zoomed around the room with Barbies on top. Ha!

I gave it some company with some Christmas children’s books and dollar store bottle brush trees.

To go with our DIY storybook art and retro felted garland already in here, I picked up this pre-lit flocked wreath and bright Christmas trees pillow.

It was completely by accident but the colors in this pillow match the rest of this room exactly!  Happy little coincidence.

And this wreath is battery operated so I don’t have to worry about running a cord down the wall or anything.  There are lights inside of the mercury glass ornaments too, so when we turn the lights down, they emit this colorful glow, which Olivia just goes bananas for.

I say this every year, but this is my favorite Christmas of all so far.  The older Olivia gets, the more exciting and magical everything is.  Four years-old is going to be the age of the best Christmas ever.  😉

Just for fun, I pulled together some of my favorite Kirkland’s Christmas decor for the more rustic glam loving types.  Ya know… if colorful, retro Christmas isn’t really your thing.

So cute!! I wish there was a Christmas tree in here too to coordinate with that stuff! It would be so fun and adorable! I could easily see more of that felt garland showing up on a cute little tree!

We can’t do without our beloved red at Christmas. It just doesn’t feel like Christmas to us in our house until I get red all over it 🙂

Although we do have a tree in our bedroom that is much more neutral and muted. Love it!

Thanks, Jessica! A few days after I photographed this, we bought a fresh little 3′ tree to put in here. We put colorful ornaments all over and my daughter had a blast making it her own. 🙂 I’m the same way. I can’t do without red in the rest of our house.

Absolutely precious! What 4 year old (or 14 yr old, or 24 yr old or 44,64,84… you get the picture!) wouldn’t love that space!
You’ve hit on a good point, with so many open concept homes, it’s hard ( and can be expensive) to be daring and try something new because usually your WHOLE HOUSE has to go along! Thats why your basement den, or a bedroom, or even a powder room can be the space where you try something totally new and unexpected.
Thank you for another great post with a fresh way to think about Christmas decorating!

Thank you, Shelley! I totally agree. Sometimes it’s hard to break our stride. But it’s also lots of fun to try something new just to see what happens. 🙂

What a fun room! You are right. 4 is a perfect age for enjoying Christmas. I miss my grandchildren being younger.(that was probably a bad sentence Ms. English teacher!) Anyway, I couldn’t love my grandchildren any more than I do, but shopping for them is not fun anymore. What did your grandparents give you when you were 19, 21 or 25? Money is not fun for me, but that seems to be the answer

Thank you, Nancy! Haha! I’m so not grading you on grammar. I hardly use proper sentences in my writing on this blog anyway. We’re just chatting, so it doesn’t count. 😉 You know… the most thoughtful gift I ever received at that age was a cookbook from my mom. She typed up all of her recipes, all the ones I grew up with and loved, and she wrote a note in it that said, “Dear Lauren, I hope you will enjoy making these recipes for your future family as much as I have loved making them for you. It has been a joy raising you and I’m so proud of you and all you have accomplished. Even though you have all the written instructions you need, don’t ever hesitate to call if you need any help. Love you, Mom.” I cried. Literally cried right there in front of the Christmas tree.

Lauren, the playroom looks wonderful! Fun and Festive! My Christmas decorations are more the traditional red & green, and they are spread throughout the entire house. I’ve started decorating, but haven’t finished yet. Looking at your playroom blog is very motivating!

NOTE to NANCY: If your grandchildren are nearby or come home from college during the summer, can you give them gift cards that combines doing something with you? Give them a gift certificate to a movie theater and a restaurant for them AND their grandparent(s)! Maybe tickets for all of you to go to a sporting event of their liking. A gift certificate to a store or mall plus a “ladies lunch” for you and a grand daughter or a “ladies day” that includes facials and pedicures, too! Maybe a night of pizza and bowling for all of you together! You might start a fun new family tradition! The “Christmas (Bowling) Ball Tournament!” You can personalize the gift cards to their liking, but make it an “event” that includes the grandparent(s) too. Not only are you giving them “something” but you are creating memories that won’t be forgotten! It will be fun! Surprise them and give it a try! : )

Thank you, Karen! We go more the traditional route in the rest of our house too. It was fun to break away from our “norm” in this room. And great gift ideas! I totally agree!

How fun and colorful! I love this playful take on Christmas decor. You always amaze me with your decorating skills! I need a lesson 🙂 everything looks so cohesive.

Super cute Lauren!

Love the whimsical approach you took to decorating your new play room/family room – so festive and fun!!! I’m sure Olivia is having a wonderful time this holiday season…..4 years old is such a great time! Thanks for sharing – so enjoying your Christmas decorating posts!

Thank you, Lanita! She is having an absolute BLAST! We’re doing Elf on the Shelf too (which we have a severe love/hate relationship for), but it makes my heart so happy to see her so giddy this time of year.

I, personally, love all the color! I especially love the glimpse of the built-ins you give in the sides of the first photo. I have very similar built-ins in my living room, and I’ve always had a hard time knowing what to do with them. This has definitely given me some ideas. Thanks!

I love your style and décor. I am curious what you use to make your mood boards. I have been playing around but can’t seem to settle on anything that offers the look I’m going for.

Omgosh, this playroom is absolutely adorable! I can’t think of kiddos that wouldn’t love to play in a room this pretty. Thanks for sharing with us at Merry Monday this week!

Hi Vanessa! We got the fan at Lowe’s a few years ago. It’s called Angora by Harbor Breeze, but unfortunately it’s been discontinued.
