DIY Rustic Arrow Growth Chart

For months, Robert has been saying to me, “We have got to make a growth chart before our kid is taller than we are.” It seems like as fast as she’s growing, that will be like…tomorrow.

Those little tick marks on our door frames were so special to us growing up, and I always find myself smiling at the one from my and my brother’s childhood at my parents’ house every time we visit.

We know the house we’re in now most likely won’t be our forever home, so I wanted to make one that we could take with us one day. Enter this fun guy…

We’ve accumulated lots of leftover wood in our garage from random projects, and as much as I really like those oversized ruler growth charts all over Pinterest, I wanted to make ours a little bit different.

Here’s what we used: (Affiliate links noted by asteriks below.)

I cut and stained my 1×10 board ahead of time before deciding to dive into our scrap pile for the arrow pieces. To make the arrow head, Robert just lined up the 1×6 board pieces to mark where to make a miter cut.

He did the same thing to the 1×4 pieces for the tail of the arrow and used his square tool as a guide. (No miter saw or miter box needed.)

We used a jigsaw, but you could use whatever saw you’re most comfortable with.

I really like the jigsaw since I’m a wimp when it comes to other power tools. And even with my basic jigsaw skills, I bat my eyelashes at Robert so that he’ll take over for me most of the time.

We lined up our pieces after cutting to double check. Hellooooo pretty wood grain!

Then we just placed them where we wanted and nailed them in to the 1×10 board.

I found these house numbers in the hardware aisle that had a metal look to them that I knew would look really fun against the rustic wood.

We used our tape measure to lay them out on the arrow to decide on the best placement, nailed them in, and attached a wire hanging kit on the back to take it with us one day if we ever move. (Eep!)

We have 2.5 years of catching up to do on this growth chart, but thankfully I kept up with all of Olivia’s measurements from pediatrician appointments. And I might have stolen some measurements from her grandparents’ growth charts too. So cute!

This upstairs hallway is no man’s land in our house. 1.5 years after moving in and it is still as blank as blank can get.

It is screaming for some paint on those builder primer walls. I’m thinking of painting wide horizontal stripes, and of course adding more artwork. Something like this:

Our laundry room is right there beside the growth chart, and we’ve talked about replacing the plain white door for one that’s more interesting.

We at least managed to replace our very plain hallway lights last year for thrifted lights I gave a quick makeover. We replaced our stairway light with a lucky Goodwill find too.

For as much wall decor as we’ve DIYed in our house, it looks like the job’s not over yet. Are you blinded now? I am.

So I’m very glad to have at least our cool rustic arrow growth chart up here. It’s something interesting greeting us at the top of the stairs.

And now I’ll have new tick marks to smile at as I walk by. It’s so bittersweet really.

One of the tasks on our to-do list this week is write Olivia’s measurements on it. And add a new one too.

What do you think? A quirky new twist on the original? Do you have a growth chart in your house? Or maybe a project you’ve finally finished that you’ve been meaning to get around to for years?

    1. Thank you, Danielle! Our “baby” girl is 2 and a half, so this was a long time coming. But thankfully, I saved all of her pediatrician records of her growth since she was born that I’ll go back and write on the chart. I need to get on that!
