My Favorite Window Decor Combination

A big thanks to Blinds.com for providing woven shades for this post. All opinions, as always, are 100% my own. For more information, see my full disclosure here.

We’ve been acting all shady in our living room lately. No, seriously. Shades are officially in our living room. (Do I have to leave now because of that terrible pun? I’m sorry.)

Truthfully, I’ve been wanting to add woven shades and change the curtains in this room for over a year! So a few days ago, I asked you guys for your input on some of my favorite curtains I was considering for our living room refresh.

This was the look we were sportin’ last week.

It’s definitely not a shabby “before” shot at all. But the thing that bugged me about our windows is they didn’t really feel like my style anymore.

These beige gatehill print curtains were one of the first things I ever bought for our house, and since then, my style has changed quite a bit. I wanted long, white, airy curtains this time around because they’re so classic and easy to decorate around throughout the seasons.

But then, I figured white curtains coupled with our white blinds would be way too much white going on. (I love clean, crisp white, but even I have my limits.)

One of my favorite ways to break up lots of whites and neutrals though is texture. So I decided on my go-to FAVORITE window decor combination:

  1.  Chunky window trim
  2. Long white curtain panels
  3. Woven Roman shades

Earlier this year, I incorporated that combination in our master bedroom and fell in love.

So I reached out to Blinds.com to see if they could hook a girl up with some texturey awesomesaucy woven shades since I’d heard nothing but great things about them from friends.

They let me pick a few samples first so that I could see the colors and textures of the shades along with the color and lighting in my own home, which helped take out most of the guesswork, and they arrived really quickly for me to decide.

I requested all of my samples from their budget colors in their natural woven wood shade line.

I got some help from some of y’all on Instagram too.

In the end, the winner was the matchstick Capri Maple shade since it was that happy “Baby Bear” color- not too dark, not too light, just right.

I let Blinds.com know which color I picked and they just had me send my window’s measurements for an inside mount and they handled the rest to make them custom.

Once the shades arrived, I knew they were going to be perfect along with the other colors and textures in the room.

We ordered ones with privacy liners since we are so super close to neighbors and didn’t want people peeking into our living room at night watching reruns of Big Bang Theory over our shoulders. (#suburbanlife #creeperstatus)

I was pretty excited to see the white blinds go.

I swear I helped Robert dismantle them after manning the camera. 😉

If you’ve never installed woven shades before, they’re really simple, way easier than regular blinds in my opinion.

We just attached the brackets to the top of our window casement…

…slid the top of the shade slits into the screws… (say that 5 times fast)

…and used a wing nut to tighten.

Done.

You can use these cleat pieces to wrap the cords when not in use. They have a cordless option too though. We attached ours outside of our casement since it would be hidden by our curtains

After we replaced the beige printed curtains with these long white ones, it felt like we had a whole new living room.

The white stitching on the matchstick shades is the perfect little detail to go along with them. They coordinate beautifully with our DIY printers cabinet.

And they contrast so well against our chunky white DIY Craftsman trim.

Window trim + white curtains + woven shades = a light, airy living room and one happy blogger.

This room is west-facing, so before, the afternoon sun was always glaring in our faces even with our blinds closed. Now that we have the shades with the privacy liners, they’re way better at filtering the sunlight.

I love that I can change the rest of the decor in here now, like throw pillows and blankets, throughout the seasons and not have the windows as a hindrance.

And even though this room is very neutral, the textures in the rug, baskets, and woven shades keeps it from being boring.

I think Drew Carrey will be ready to hire me as one of his Price Is Right girls any day now. 😉 Ha!

I whipped up a quick video of the process too:

If you want a really real “before” of how far this living room has come though, here’s the entire progress timeline from Day 1.

Now:

This space finally feels like it’s finished, now that it’s a reflection of what I love and doesn’t have pieces in it that I just tolerate and try to work around.

I’m so excited to already start thinking of ways to decorate for fall in here, which you’ll be seeing next month.

Are you loving the change? Was the Capri Maple the right choice? Are you a big fan of the trim + white curtains + woven shades combination too? It’s sort of the white t-shirt and jeans look that will always be a classic and go with as many accessories as your heart desires.

  1. Love all the contrasting textures in your room. The shades are the final perfect touch. By the way, do you know what the background music in your video is? Thanks

    1. Thanks, Cindy! So… that video was my first attempt ever at video editing. Haha! I’m so not a pro. I just used some stock background music on my Mac in iMovie called “Acoustic Sunrise”.

  2. Hi Lauren they look so pretty, love the choice of blinds and curtains! I also wanted to ask you I noticed you have a rug over your carpet in living room, where did you get it? We have carpet still in our living room and was thinking about adding something along your line of rug. Now do you find it buckles at all?

  3. Looks good – question for you – what are you going to do with your white binds? I sure could use them in my house. Seriously – what are you going to do with them????

    1. Thanks, Carol! I’d love to be able to pass them on to you, but I already gave them to my neighbor who needed some.

  4. I love everything…especially the area rug in the livingroom. I was windering if you had a rug pad uner it to,keep it from ‘walking’ on the other rug?

    1. Thanks, Mari! We don’t have a rug pad under it. This rug is particularly stiff, so it luckily doesn’t move around on us.

  5. Such a great before and after! The transformation is just beautiful Lauren! You did a great job!! Thanks for sharing.

  9. Totally love what you are doing! The new blinds are fabulous! Your style is my style and I enjoy seeing your creations. Quick questions, do you a related post plugin at the end of your posts? If so, which one? I really like the look of the thumbnails. Thank you!

    1. Thank you! I cannot for the life of me remember what related post plugin I have that does that. I just looked through my plugins and can’t figure out which one triggers that. My web designer set all of that up, so I can send her a message to ask for you. 🙂

  10. Love this-so pretty. I enjoy your blog and all your updates. What color is the paint in the Living Room and where did you get the white curtains?

    1. Ditto! It all looks incredible. Great choice with the blind selection and curtains. Gorgeous. Cheers, Ardith

    2. Lauren- From the move in to now- it is beautiful. We moved in to our present home about a year and a half ago. I am only now getting around to changing out what I want. Hopefully my redo will look as great as yours. I love the cocktail table and wicker chest.
