Masculine Restoration Hardware Inspired Office Makeover Plan

We sorta kinda accidentally started a room makeover this week. Yeah, in addition to the one we already have going on in our master bedroom. And I have no idea how it happened all of a sudden.

We’re either crazy or super ambitious…or maybe a combination of both.

Maybe it’s because while Robert and I were working on a couple projects in the bedroom, we had this semi-empty, semi-cluttered space next door being all pouty and sad and lonely looking. Our home office really does look a bit abandoned since we’ve been spiffing up the other rooms.

UPDATE!  See all of the office projects and progress below:

Listen… can’t you just hear it crying, sniffling, and saying, “But…but…don’t you love me anymore?”

Poor little neglected office.

Ever since we moved in, I had the big idea to design this space with a masculine vintage military feel since Robert already has plenty of military memorabilia from back in the day.

I think masculine office, and my brain automatically pictures Restoration Hardware:

I mean hello. This photo makes me want to smoke a pipe while wearing a bowler hat or lace up some old leather boxing gloves and punch something. All manlified in its manly manliness.

So I’m hoping I can pull this one off for waaaaay cheaper than the typical Restoration Hardware pricetag. And here’s what I’m envisioning in here:

Shelves | Desk | Chair | Rug | Map | Light Fixture | Potted Plants | Metal Sphere

We won’t be using these exact items pictured since we’ll be doing our own cheaper DIY versions for a lot of it.

When we first moved in, we scored the Pottery Barn desk for $180 on Craigslist! And in nearly perfect condition. Yay!

Then, I found a vintage desk chair on Craigslist too that I gave a makeover. Then it all sort of came to a screeching halt.

We’ll definitely be framing out the two windows in here with our DIY Craftsman Trim. And I’ve thought about incorporating olive drab burlap panel curtains or Roman shades or something. I’ll have to see if it makes the room too dark or not.

We’ll also be moving the desk to the middle of the room in front of the windows.

The bookcases are leftover from our newlywed apartment-dwelling days, and we might be selling them soon. I’ve thought about making a small gallery wall where the bookcases now sit to display any of Robert’s mementos and pictures and things.

On the wall where the desk is currently, we’re going to build some DIY industrial steel shelving and hang a large, old world map.

The “boob” light is getting nixxed for something more industrial too.

I’m still not totally sure about the rug, but I’ll know when we get to that point.

I’ve even debated about painting the room darker, but I might be going overboard on the dark, masculine look with that idea. That takes guts…and um…I might be too wimpy.

Are you envisioning it yet? You think we’re going in the right direction? Anything you would add or change in our plans? Robert is so happy to have a space that can really be his. He works so hard around here helping me with so much (bless his heart and that wacko wife of his), and this office for him has been long overdue.

  3. Haha, I love it! “We sorta kinda accidentally started a room makeover this week.” This happens to me often, I’m not very good at sticking to one project at a time. I love the ideas you have for the office. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together.
