Hey hey! It just hit me yesterday that everyone in my area is back to school. And this is the first year in five years I’m not a teacher scrambling to get her classroom in order and tossing and turning about the next day’s lesson. It feels so strange!
You know that dream you sometimes had as a kid when you found yourself at school in your underwear in front of all of your classmates? The teacher version is showing up to work without a lesson plan and the students are bouncing off the walls not behaving for anything. True story. I can’t tell you how many times I had that dream last school year alone.
So it’s official. I’m a broke stay-at-home-mom now. And this week I dove into a few areas of our house that were driving me ca-razy! More than those freaky teacher dreams. Number one on my list was the coat closet. (I’ll start you off with the nice after photo so you don’t completely judge me on my mess. Wink.)
Do you know how long we’ve been living in this house? 8 months. Imagine what it would look like a year from now if I let it keep going in this downward spiral.
I really needed to make this closet functional since it is our only closet downstairs. Everything gets dumped in here when we walk in the door. I would love to have a little landing area with a bench and some baskets underneath with a hall tree, but the changes I made to the closet were much cheaper for now. And, in all, it was about $50 at Walmart.
So, first, I had to pull every last bit of junk out of that space. Want to play our version of Where’s Waldo for a sec?
Okay, our toddler wasn’t buried quiet yet, but it was reeeaaally bad. So I organized everything into piles- jackets to keep downstairs, items to donate, small items for seasonal bins, and random things that needed to go in the appropriate places in other parts of the house.
And then I unearthed two hairy spiders. Oh my gah! At least they were dead. Now that I’m recapping and typing this, I feel all creepy crawly all over. Shiver. (Are you super glad I didn’t snap a close-up?)
I vaccumed out the bottom of the closet and we were in business.
For organizing all of the randomness that was in here before, I happened to have two bins that were perfect for the top shelf. I labeled one for winter and threw in all of our hats, scarves, and gloves…because winter is coming. (Game of Thrones? Anyone?)
For the summer bin, I put in a couple beach towels, hats, sunscreen, and any other beachy-pool related things floating around in there.
We like to have a few blankets in the closet too since it is right beside our living room and we like to curl up with them while watching movies. But I was getting sick of seeing them wadded up in the floor of the closet. After seeing the spiders, I definitely don’t want one of those stoweaways in my throw. So I attached two towel bars to the inside of the door to hold those.
We always end up with bags tossed in the floor of the closet too (guilty…it’s mainly me who does it), so I anchored two wall hooks for my purse and diaper bag.
And this little shelf was so perfect for the three of us. We get our own space each. No more shoes all over our downstairs! I hope.
Ah. I can breathe better already. I feel like organizing and exercising are so similar. It’s a pain in the butt to do and it takes dedication, but it feels so good in the end. Now if only running a marathon was as easy as cleaning out a closet. My house would be spotless if it made me drop pants sizes.
While I organized this space, Robert managed to carve out some time to paint our master bathroom. You can check out my big plans for that from my Friday Faves: Bathroom Edition post.
And I’ve been squeezing in a few painting sessions of Olivia’s furniture throughout the week during her naptimes, so I’ll be updating you guys on her room too. I have all of the details on Bug-Bug’s Ballerina Board.
As for the final steps of the fireplace, while cutting our log ends for the media door, my father-in-law’s table saw we were using completely bent. So another set back but we’re getting it together.
Lots of stuff going on in the Casa de Shaver!
As always, I love love reading your comments and e-mails. Seriously, I do a happy bum wiggle dance every time I get one. 🙂
