Yard Progress and New Porch Lights

Most of the time, I usually try to share posts with y’all that will help you in your own homes and give you ideas and empower you. At least, I really hope that’s what you get from this whole DIY / decorating adventure.

Today though, I’m having a moment of we-finally-have-green-grass-and-trees-and-the-weeds-are-pulled-and-we-have-new-porch-lights-and-doggone-it-I’m-showing-everybody.

This past weekend, beautiful summer decided to arrive (on the arm of her trusty beau humidity, as usual… they’re inseparable like that). And while Robert went buck wild on our crazy overgrown yard, I cleaned the inside of the house and promptly followed around his exterior progress with my camera… right around the time Robert discovered he was covered head to toe in poison oak… so that was fun.

It’s so hard to believe that just 6 months ago, the front of our house looked like this:

And now hello sunshine and green all over!

If you didn’t follow along this past winter, we gave the exterior brick a full limewashing around Christmas.

And over the course of the past month, we’ve been working on filling in the patches of balding grass and pulling weeds out of the flower beds.

We still have some weeds sprinkled in the grass that we’re working on eliminating, and the bushes around the front stoop could use some beefing up. Pulling up the old pine needles and replacing them with dark mulch is on our to-do list too.

I have even bigger plans for a pretty paver walkway leading up to the front door surrounded by flowers, but that probably won’t happen until next year along with a backyard fence replacement.

I just can’t get the vision of Martha Stewart’s Turkey Hill out of my head.

All that plush landscaping. Ooooh ahhhh.

We’ll get there one day.

Right now, I’m just thankful for big green trees that we had absolutely none of in our old cookie cutter house. It’s one of the main reasons we chose an older house. Treeeeeeeeeees!

Besides the landscaping perk up, we swapped out our old rusted porch lights with these lights that are a bit more updated but still with a traditional vibe.

And a new wreath I picked up for 40% off because… summer. (And also because birds nested in my spring wreath and made a total mess of it. Ha!)

The American flag always stays year-round because that’s how we roll in our house. 😉  Pretty sure I’ve mentioned Robert’s red, white, and blue obsession before.

There are days I still can’t believe we get to live here. It definitely doesn’t come without its challenges and moments of “what did we get ourselves into?” but I wouldn’t trade it at all.

So while we’re on the subject, do you have any miraculous grass formulas? We’ll be trying out some weed and feeds and hopefully perking up some places with mulch next. And maybe fattening up the bushes situation in front to be Turkey Hill-esque.

  1. Hi! I would love to know the color you used on your shutters and door. I just purchased an old colonial style home and painting the exterior is first on my list. Your home looks beautiful. Well done. 🙂 Thank you!

  2. I also live in an area where summer and humidity go hand in hand and I love your analogy! What a wonderful diamond in the rough you found. It’s really a lovely home.

  3. Oh my goodness…it’s coming together beautifully! Love all your updates.

I can see why you have Turkey Hill in your head…the houses have a very similar look.

As for the grass, you may want to look into Spring Green or a similar company. I finally caved and bought a year’s service. I can’t believe what a difference one application made! The grass is lush and weed free. I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes.

  4. We have two locally owned businesses that deal in the getting your “lawn” to grow!! One has the term weed in his business name and well lately he’s been inundated with inquiries of another kind!! But these two companies are so much better than using a bag of Lowe’s stuff when the problem is intense. They do soil analysis and get you going right. I hope you have that in your area. Ours is used by the landscaping businesses. I wish you success in keeping your lawn lush. No fun to have “stickers” and poison ivy nor oak. Hugs. Gotta love ❤️ everything!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

  5. You are an inspirational couple. The progress that you have made on your home is amazing. Be cautious about weeed and feed products. They are unsafe for pets and children to play or walk on. I look forward to your wonderful interior projects. Let hubby handle the exterior and the poison oak. Stay safe especially since you are expecting a little one.
