Remember that whole decision making visualization adventure we had in our breakfast nook last week? (If that post taught me anything, it’s that I’m one LUCKY girl to have y’all to give me direction when I feel lost. #SoNotAPro #DesignerWannabe)
This room stumped me since Day 1 of moving in, which looked like this nearly two years ago, by the way…
But so many of you had the same realization I did about this small, oddly laid out space.
The Craigslist table we’d bought when we first moved in desperately needed to be swapped out for a round one to help with the traffic flow and to keep us from bumping elbows during family meals.
And then as I was browsing around for a winner, I found out that Walmart just released its own private label brand called MoDRN, and this Scandinavian table pulled at my little Swedish heartstrings.
Their line has pieces designed around scandi minimal, retro glam, and refined industrial styles.
This space isn’t really finished, in my eyes, but it’s a step in the right direction.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been trying to let go of the farmhouse look a bit for a more sophisticated, modern-meets-traditional style. In our colonial home, the super rustic farmhouse stuff feels a little out of place.
So I did something new for a change. I sprung for modern Scandinavian. And do you know what? It feels fresh and clean and minimalist, which is what our lives desperately need at the moment with a messy, high maintenance almost 5 month old.
That farmhousey DIY wall planter and pendant light will be hanging around for a while longer until we decide what to swap them out with. And I love that, for now, it mixes the best of both worlds while we transition the style of this space. (Don’t worry; I’m picturing a more traditional light fixture and wall decor to tone down the modern, so it feels more cozy and classic in here.)
Robert and Olivia have sprawled out around this table every night after dinner to color and do science projects together before bedtime ever since it arrived (that’s their “thing” and it’s adorable).
I added in this oversized metal clock too since we’re always needing one at a glimpse from the adjoining living room.
And I stuck these Scandinavian style candle holders and this sweet blue vase in the middle for a touch of spring thinking just maybe it’ll encourage the weather outside to take a hint already.
These speckled dishes came from the Walmart MoDRN line too, since I’ve been wanting some neutral casual dinnerware that’s durable for Olivia to clunk around.
The only thing is I’m concerned that the table might be just a teeny bit too big for the space. Robert says it’s perfect because he loves having room to sprawl out at meals. Y’all settle the debate for me on that one, but it’s definitely proven that round is the way to go in this space.
Sometime soon, I’d love to add a rug to soften the space until we can one day (probably years from now) tackle a flooring renovation. But we’ll get to that one step at a time.
Home wasn’t built in a day, right? 😉 I have to put that saying on repeat sometimes.
I’m just thankful that our little family finally has enough room now to enjoy breakfast and dinner together without bumping elbows, especially since it’s about to get a whole lot messier with Regan ready to start solid foods soon.
If you’ve been leaning a little more modern in your decorating style lately too, you can see more from the Walmart MoDRN line here to get more modern designer looking furniture and decor for a not-as-designery price tag.
You can find all of the sources I used here:
- Scandinavian round dining table
- Scandinavian wall clock
- Scandinavian blue vase
- Scandinavian silver candle holders
- Speckled gray dish set
- Bistro chairs
- Flower pot rings
- Water hyacinth placemats
You think all of the blues and greenery in this space will encourage spring to get here a little faster? Here’s hoping anyway!
I love the design of wall clock, it looks very unique and authentic.
Your pictures are not showing up, only the text
Hi, Barb!! Check it out again. It should be loading for you now.
The shape and size of your table look great to me! Evolving means you are living!!!
I think the table is super interesting. I’m Norwegian so anything in that area gets me excited. My only concern with the table is it doesn’t seem to have a lot of leg room? Like it is too tight to fit your legs through. Leg space is always really important to me, so was curious, but I think a round table was definitely the way to go and I just love how your style has evolved with your new home. It’s beautiful!
I love this new look! I think the scale of the table fits the size of the room, however, does it impede the flow of traffic?
With the chairs pushed out, it does, which is what makes me think 42″ might be better. It’s tough because I really do like it.
We have a 42” table and it’s awkward- just a teeny bit too small for four. I’m looking for a larger one! Love this look – I was looking at something similar- but we have a need now for an oval six seater and I’ll be dashed if I can find one!
I like the round table, so much better! I think your husband is right about the size. Visually it fits the size of the area and extra elbow room is great!
Looks great! I don’t think the table is too big at all.
I love the round table and I can understand the advantages of it. Without standing in the room, it looks like a perfect fit! Great choice!
Looks amazing… enjoy. ???
I wonder if the table top is the right size and the base is too big. If it was smaller you could push the chairs in more and you don’t have to sacrifice the “sprawl out.” You could probably DIY your own table base and keep the table top.
VERY true! Maybe that’s what’s tripping me up.
Painting those two doors was such a fabulous design decision for this room! And I think the room is lovely just as it is. Elbow room lovers unite! 🙂
It fits perfect! I too, went from a rectangular table to a round one and think it functions so much better! I also love the refresh you did on the grout. I am not sure when you did it, but it looks really nice!
Love the round table. It is right in this space. Do not overthink your decisions. We only need to please our families and our needs
So true!
Happy hungry hubby at dinner time, happy evening…vote for the current table 🙂
Hahaha! He’d be happy to hear that.
Looks great and not too big….you’re just not used to it. We have this one under our table and LOVE it.

Like a new haircut, right? 😉 I have a hard time with those too.
Round is definitely the way to go, but the base of this table is too busy.
Love the round tabletop. Wondering if you think it is too big because of the base? Doesn’t look like you can push your chairs under causing them to stick out in your “traffic flow”…just a thought!
That’s probably it! Makes me sad because I really love it.
I’m wondering what the base of the table would look painted a darker color…. there just seems to be an awful lot of white. Then again maybe just the addition of a rug would break it up. Can’t wait to see what kind of light you put up to tie it all together!
Once I add a rug, it’ll add a lot of contrast. I agree; it’s a LOT of white right now. We’re a work in progress over here.
Lauren, your choice of a table is great and looks so nice in your space. You always do such a lovely job of everything you do! Enjoy! Blessings!
Thank you, Mary-Ann! You are always too kind. 🙂
I LOVE round tables and this one is beautiful. I also think it’s a good size for the space. There is one huge problem with it that would prevent our family from ever having a table like it – the pedestal style leaves very little foot space. With the chairs in the position in the photo, the front legs are touching the table pedestal. I like the open look but would need more traditional legs or a single, solid pedestal in the middle. Btw, we are big fans of large wall clocks, too!
That’s a good point. I love the style of the table, but maybe for a bigger room since we can’t scoot chairs all the way under.
I am wondering about your herbs/plants on the wall. Do you take them all outside occasionally for sunlight?
They’re totally fake. 😉 Real plants don’t stand a chance against my black thumb, unfortunately.
I’m a big fan of round tables. I have an old oak, center pedestal table for our breakfast table. I still like the look of the wall planter! Love that greenery accent. Fun to watch the changes.
Lauren, your chairs look perfect with the table. You could put Regan under the table while you eat. Ha Ha (makes a good cage)
Hahaha! SO so wrong.
Table looks perfect – it is NOT too big. It works beautifully. Love the clock – really don’t be in too big a rush to lose that chandy and wall bins – there’s nothing wrong with mixing it up – and your transitional decor works in harmony there. I love that pendant lantern. It looks amazing there.
Very interesting table! I really want to check out this new line at Wal-Mart. Honestly, however, I think the table looks too light visually for the space, and I agree with the others that the wide base possibly impedes leg room and keeps the chairs from being pushed in as far. I have two oak pedestal tables in my home and absolutely love them. I think a wood pedestal table in a white-washed finish or light wood finish (maybe like your new bathroom mirror frames) would be nice, and definitely a rug at some point. Decorating is definitely trial and error sometimes! If it helps, we use a 42” round table in our small kitchen breakfast nook and it is plenty of room for a family of four. We have even squeezed an extra person in occasionally.
While I’m a fan of simple, something is throwing me off with the table. I saw others mention the base and overall light and bright of the table, and I agree.
Round is definitely the way to go, but the table’s overall *structure* is reminding me of patio furniture and it seems just out if place?
However, you get to decide what works best for your family and home. So glad I found your blog and have enjoyed following!
Hi, Julie!! Thank you. 🙂
Hi Lauren! Love the new clock! The table is cute and looks much cuter with your bistro chairs, but I think you’re going to have problems with adult leg room. Eek! That’s ok though because you’ll know to get a smaller pedestal for your maybe forever table, right? Also, I don’t think you’re going to want to go any smaller than a 48 inch round table. You’re probably going to want even larger with a growing family. Those kids won’t be small for long, lol! You’re going to need the room for sure! Wasn’t there a long credenza type piece of furniture on that wall with the herb pots, in that Modsy mock-up of your room? I think that would look good on that wall. I know what you mean about the farmhouse look not suiting your home type. I’ve got the same issue so I just take a few of the less literal farmhouse decor and use some of that in my house. It seems to work well. I’m more of a French country with a little traditional thrown in, lol. I’m clearly confused, hahaha! That really is one tricky setup you’ve got in that room with the door placement. I can’t believe your baby is almost 5 months! It seems like you just had her! My how time flies. It probably feels like longer than that to you, being sleep deprived and all, lol. Try and get some rest. Enjoy the rest of your week. Spring will be here before you know it! ?
Hi Lauren – Love following your ideas and appreciate hearing that sometimes you have to work through them too! I agree that the round table is the way to go but as much as I love pedestal tables I won’t buy one because of a lack of leg room. Can’t wait to see what you decide to do. Quick question, have you ever thought about changing out your back door for one that has full length glass like a french door? I think it would be nice to see out back from the breakfast nook.
Thanks for info on the new website, going there next!
Karen, thank you for sharing your insight. 🙂 And, we would not want to put a glass door at the breakfast area. The door leads to our garage. It is right now being used as a gym for my husband. However, if it held a view your idea would be perfect. 🙂
What a change. I love the black doors! Great job.
Thank you, Rebecca!!
U knocked it out of the park again!! Love the new look & thank you for reading all our comments. Glad u kept the wall planter!!!
Looks fantastic and you have given me some wonderful inspiration!
I was just wondering what you used to update your grout?
A grout pen! I did a whole post about it and you can find it here: https://www.blesserhouse.com/memory-foam-layered-kitchen-rug-tile-grout-refresh/ Hope that helps!
