How I Turned a Secretary Desk Into a DIY Makeup Vanity in Our Small Bathroom
Back when I was designing our bathroom before its big remodel, I knew I would have to make some sacrifices.
Our primary bathroom is on the smaller side, and for years I just accepted that meant I’d always be doing my makeup standing at the sink, juggling brushes next to a toothpaste tube like some kind of balancing act.

But deep down, I’ve always wanted a little sit-down makeup spot. Something that felt a little more “get ready in peace” and a little less “rush and hope for the best.”
And then one day it hit me…
A secretary desk. In the bathroom!

Why a Secretary Desk Works So Well as a Vanity
If you’ve ever seen a traditional secretary desk, you know they’re basically the Swiss Army knife of furniture.
They’ve got:
- A drop-down desk surface
- Tons of hidden compartments
- Upper cabinets for storage
- And a closed-up look that keeps everything tidy
Which is exactly what a small bathroom needs.

The biggest problem with most makeup setups is visual clutter. Bottles, brushes, palettes… it piles up fast. But a secretary desk lets you shut it all away in seconds.
Closed = calm, clean, clutter-free
Open = fully functional getting-ready station
Best of both worlds.
I’m a sucker for a good Facebook Marketplace find. But this one took patience.
And then finally… there it was.
The one. 🙌

How I Turned It Into a Makeup Vanity
Honestly, this was one of those “low effort, high reward” projects we love.
I didn’t need to paint it or completely transform it. The bones were already beautiful.
Here’s all I did:
- Polished the mahogany wood with Restor-A-Finish to bring it back to life
- Used some furniture repair markers to disguise any gashes in the wood
- Replaced the missing shelves inside for better organization
- Added unlacquered brass latches for a classic, timeless detail that made the storage more accessible
That’s it.
Sometimes the best DIY is knowing when to not overdo it.

How We’re Using All That Storage
This is where this piece really shines.

Top Cabinet: Bathroom Essentials (But Make It Pretty)
The upper cabinet is now home to:
- Folded towels
- Apothecary jars filled with:
- Cotton balls
- Q-tips
- Floss picks
- Shower steamer tablets
It’s functional storage, but still feels styled and intentional.

Desk Area: My Hidden Makeup Station
The drop-down desk is my favorite part.
Inside, I store:
- Acrylic organizers with my everyday makeup
- Makeup brushes in a silver mint julep cup
- Light-up mirror
- Vintage lipstick holder (look how cute!)
- Cordless lamp for extra light to see my face
And when I’m done I just close the desk, and it’s like it doesn’t exist.
No mess. No clutter. No visual chaos taking over the bathroom counter.

Bottom Cabinet: The “Tuck It Away” Zone
The cabinet underneath ended up being the perfect bonus space.
It fits:
- A vanity stool (that slides right inside when not in use)
- A basket hamper
And maybe my favorite part…
It adds so much character!

Bathrooms can be one of the easiest places to forget personality. But bringing in a furniture piece like this instantly makes the space feel layered, collected, and lived-in, in the best way.
A secretary desk wasn’t designed to be a vanity…
But it works better than most vanities I’ve tried.
If you’ve been wishing for a more functional bathroom but feel stuck because of space, this might just be your sign to start looking at furniture a little differently. It’s amazing how many secretary desks are out there on FBMP for next to nothing.
Sometimes the perfect solution is just hiding in plain sight… waiting for a second life.
