I Used ChatGPT to Design Our Bedroom – Steal My Prompt

You know that moment when you think you’re just going to touch up a paint color and suddenly you’re planning a whole room refresh? Yeah… that happened.

I’ve been itching to give our primary bedroom a little love lately. Nothing wild—just a small refresh. But I want to do something bold without spending a fortune. Enter: ChatGPT DIY Decorator School Room Visualizer.

Yep. I asked ChatGPT to help me plan a moody, cozy, olive green oasis… and it delivered.

Our Bedroom Makeover Plans

I plan to use the color drenching technique—painting the walls, trim, doors, and ceiling the same earthy olive tone. (Still over here staring at paint samples to make a color decision.) Just that one change already makes the whole room feel taller and more dramatic.

I also found the perfect gold crystal dome fandelier to swap out our current ceiling fan. (You know how I love my fandeliers.) Total game changer.

Furniture Makeover Visualizing

But now I’m staring at our old farmhouse-style dresser… and wondering. Do I leave it as-is for contrast? Or give it a mini makeover to match our more modern traditional style now? I’d love your thoughts—comment and help a girl out?

This was the idea my ChatGPT prompt gave me. It’s still not perfect, of course. It puts light fixtures and art in funky places sometimes, but it’s a great place to start.

To be clear, I don’t think ChatGPT can ever truly replace a real human interior designer. But when you’re a homeowner trying to get your ideas out of your head and onto paper—or in this case, screen—it’s a really helpful tool.

Why You Should Use a DIY Room Rendering

I’ve been using AI to generate mood boards and room renderings to help communicate my vision to Robert (he’s a visual guy, and this makes the whole “trust me” part a lot easier). It’s one of several communication tools I recommend in my Design Lab Partner workshop for DIY couples.

If you’re staring down a room makeover and feeling overwhelmed, that’s exactly why I created my DIY Decorator School course. It’s the step-by-step system I wish I had years ago when I first started decorating our home. It walks you through how to:

  • See the full potential of what you already have in your home and how to take advantage of thrifty tricks.
  • Learn how to plan for function, test furniture layouts, know the right measurements, and create a cohesive color palette.
  • Build your confidence to take risk and see the rewards in your home to serve you and your family well.

So if you’re ready to take your home from “I don’t know where to start” to “this feels so us,” I created this course to help you.

  1. I really enjoyed using the chat gpt but I couldn’t get any of the links to product suggestions to work. It would resend in different ways but never worked, any suggestions?

    1. Sometimes links are finicky on ChatGPT. Sadly, there isn’t anything I can do to control that part. But you can use Google Lens Search to point you in the direction to similar items it suggests.

  2. I think the color change is great. I googled on that light fixture which is gorgeous but do you think the crystals move when the fan is on and “tinkles”? That would drive me nuts!
As far as changing the dresser(s), your existing dressers have 10 times more character. The AI dressers are trimmed up and simple and very boring. Wait.

  3. So much fun! I uploaded a picture of my daughter’s room (she is out of college and currently living abroad on a work/travel visa). I asked for three different looks, bohemian, mid century modern, and cottage style. Didn’t realize it would actually give you suggestions as well as create a photo! After the first two I did have trouble uploading the photo again as the option wasn’t showing, not sure what’s up with that. I have used ChatGPT before to turn photos into story book images. I may have been at my limit for the free option. I have to admit, I’m not crazy about AI in general (little scared actually of what it could be used for), but I’m excited to try it again later with some different rooms in my house. No current plans for any makeovers but it’s neat to see the ideas, thanks for sharing!

    1. Oh good! I’m so glad you liked it! Yes, it does have a limit if you’re using the free version, so it probably hit its max for the day.
