Lately, I’ve found myself down the rabbit hole of burgundy paint colors as I’ve had ideas swirling in my head for a powder room refresh.
It’s a color that has been vastly increasing the past year or so as an interior design trend; Better Homes & Gardens even dubbed burgundy the biggest color in 2023.
But despite its recent climb on the trend scale, burgundy always has a place in classic interior design. This deep, rich hue is like a fine red wine – it gets better with time.
We’ll delve into the world of burgundy paint colors and discover why they are a popular choice for homeowners seeking elegance and warmth.
So I dove deep into the many gorgeous burgundy shades out there in my search method for finding the perfect paint color, and it felt like the perfect round up to add to the favorite paint color archives.

How to Use Burgundy Paint Colors
Painting your home is a powerful way to express your personality and set the tone for your living space. While there are countless colors to choose from, few can match the timeless and sophisticated appeal of burgundy.
History of Burgundy in Interior Design
Burgundy is a color with a rich history that dates back to the 6th century in the Burgundy region of France, where it was derived from the wines produced there.
The color quickly became associated with luxury, royalty, and sophistication. Today, it continues to exude an air of opulence that is both classic and contemporary.
Where to Use Burgundy Paint Colors
One of the most striking features of burgundy is its versatility in interior design. This deep red hue can be used in various ways to achieve different effects. Burgundy paint colors can range from dark dusty pinks to slightly purple plum tones.
Here are some ideas to use this wine color hue in your home:
Furniture and Cabinets
Consider incorporating burgundy-colored furniture pieces like sofas, chairs, or cabinets. They can be paired with neutral tones for a balanced look or with complementary colors like gold or cream for a luxurious feel.
Bedroom
Burgundy can bring warmth and intimacy to the bedroom. Consider using it for bedding, drapes, or even the headboard if committing to the dark red color on walls feels too overwhelming.
I love using black paint in bedrooms for the vary same reason – deep dark paint colors encourage restful sleep.
Dining Room
Burgundy dining room walls can set the stage for memorable dinner parties with intimate conversation and cozy comfort. Combine with dark wood furniture and brass fixtures for a timeless look.
Bathroom
In small bathrooms, burgundy can contrarily to popular belief actually help the space feel bigger. Dark hues tend to blur the edges of a room causing walls to look receded creating the illusion of more space. Powder rooms especially can be a fun surprise for guests when painted a dramatic burgundy.

How to Decorate With Burgundy
While burgundy is undeniably beautiful, it’s important to use it judiciously to avoid overwhelming a space.
Here are some tips for creating balance:
Lighting
Adequate lighting is essential when using burgundy. Well-placed lighting fixtures can help illuminate the space and prevent it from feeling too dark.
Contrast
Use contrasting colors, such as creams, beiges, or soft grays, to balance the intensity of burgundy wall paint.
Texture
Incorporate various textures, like plush rugs, soft fabrics, and metallic accents, to add depth and interest to the room.
Whether you choose to make a bold statement with burgundy walls or incorporate it in smaller doses through accessories and furniture, this rich hue has the power to infuse warmth, personality, and sophistication into your home.
So, the next time you’re considering a color palette for your interior, don’t forget to explore the timeless allure of burgundy – a shade that never goes out of style.
I cannot wait to see one of these shades in our powder room soon! Keep an eye out on Instagram Stories later and I’ll sample a few of these shades “in person”.

What? It’s back so soon? I painted a large living room wall burgundy in the early 2000’s. It was so very pretty but was looking out-of-date so I painted a mid-gray over it. It’s crazy how colors can feel dated but when they come back around, we realize they are, indeed, still beautiful.
Some of these pics are pretty, but I would never paint anything burgundy…or any red for that matter!
I’ve long been thinking of repainting my burgundy entryway a different color because I thought it was out of style, but maybe I keep it now? Any suggestions on how to modernize it so it looks current versus hearkening back to the Tuscan craze of the late 90s early 2000s? I have a hard time sticking to what I truly love, not being swayed by what current trends say is “in” or “out”. I’ve honestly always liked burgundy, but felt pressure to repaint because I thought it was shamefully out of style. Help! ๐
Keep if you love it!! Maybe you can add a wallpaper to make it feel fresh. Monotone the trim or lighten the trim. Or do not feel like you need to make any changes. Create your home the way you enjoy it. You were just here first and we are all catching on. ?
I had a new house built in the year 2000 and put burgundy wall to wall carpeting in the whole place! I didnt know it was making a comeback but I must say…. those pictures you posted are beautiful!
Oh, how I love burgundy. The pictures here don’t do it justice, most of the rooms are darkened, dark at the top, so the true color is not true. Now I’m wanting an accent wall. For years, I have thought of painting the back of my bedroom door in high gloss burgundy so I could fall asleep with the beautiful image! Burgundy is also a great idea for smaller decor items when painting a wall may be too much wine… had to work that in. Will you be decorating with burgundy?
