Why, yes. Our front porch is still decorated for summer and our back porch is decorated for fall. #dontjudgeme
Listen, if you live with the wacky fall weather of the South where it’s 98 degrees one minute and 40 degrees exactly 24 hours later, you get it.
I’ve finally accepted fall over here (2 weeks after Labor Day is apparently late in Blogger World). Don’t expect me to go all orange on everything this year though. It ain’t happenin’.
Because I am still on my quest to be more purposeful in what I buy for our home.
If I can stretch out the use of our pillows, throw blankets, and 90% of our decor into the winter and spring months, I’ll feel like a winner.
So this season, I tried to be on the lookout for items that would do exactly that as a sort of “capsule wardrobe” for our home. To last well beyond November!
I picked up a few things from Walmart with that purpose in mind, all with super low price tags because I totally get that when it comes to paying your mortgage and buying home decor, the mortgage kind of wins out. π
I hope this helps y’all in some way to not only buy decor that is “budget friendly” in the first place but also decor that will have a long life in your home so that you don’t have to keep reinventing the wheel every three months when a new season rolls around.
Our neutral fall back porch capsule:
1. Reversible Gray Plaid/Check Throw Pillows
These would look so pretty on into the post-Christmas months and on into spring. And they’re plaid on one side, buffalo check on the other so you can get two different looks out of them.
2. Cream Knit Throw Blanket
This blanket is definitely coming inside to our living room because it is way too soft and cozy to stay on our back porch all the time. It’s definitely staying out for Christmas and winter after the fall season is over because it’s just begging me to curl up by the fire with a book.
3. White Knit Lumbar Pillow
Another goodie that will last into winter. It’s soooo soft.
4. Aqua Trimmed Throw Pillow
To be honest, I wish the insert for this pillow was a little more full. But I do love the color of the cover, and it will be great for spring/summer next year. Thankfully, I always keep feather inserts on hand so I plan on swapping out the one it came with.
5. Brown and Gray Throw Blanket
This blanket is destined to be repurposed as a Thanksgiving-y tablecloth later. (I love using plaid throw blankets at tablecloths and scarves as table runners.)
6. Copper Votive Holder
The single piece of copper I got all year… I’m a sucker for it. But the copper I do already have has lasted me for years and works perfectly with all of my regular neutral decor to add a fall vibe in a classic way.
BUT the great thing about copper: It adds warm orange-y hues without being specific to fall, so you can really still get away with using it in other seasons too.
7. Black Striped Table Runner
Just a great, simple runner that will work all year round. It would be so cute dressed up all spooky for Halloween though.
8. Whitewashed Candle Holders
I like using these types of candle holders anywhere – dining tables, buffet tops, coffee tables, dressers, wherever needs a little glow and texture.
9. Faux White Pumpkin
I stuck this little cutie pumpkin on top of a couple of real ones from the grocery store. Is it weird that I prefer the “ugly” bumpy, misshapen pumpkins? The uglier they are, the more charming they are.
Add some string lights and lanterns and ta da! Instant cozy fall porch.
Once the weather cools down in a month (give or take), we’ll haul our fire pit table we used last fall back up here too.
Maybe that helps? I’m kind of new-ish on this decor capsule idea, but several of you requested it on my Instagram Stories, and I gotta say. I LOVE this new direction to simplify, decrease decor storage space, and stretch your dollar.
If you want to know about any of the sources we used on this porch, you can find them all here:
Are you into the “capsule” idea? Got any fall decor must-haves that you always incorporate in your home?
Maybe the weather will eventually take a hint.
Hi Lauren. This is so beautiful!! Love your mixture of color and elements. Question.. Are the hanging string lights stocked with glass bulbs or nobreak bulbs? I have acorns firing on my patio so much that we need to wear crash helments just to sit outdoors. So I’m all fingers-crossed that your beautiful lights are nobreak. Thanks so much for the help.
Thank you, Susie!! I got quite the visual on your acorn problem. LOL. They are stated to be outdoor waterproof but do not claim to be no break. They are pretty sturdy around the wiring. Here are some that look almost identical that have the shatterproof claim. https://rstyle.me/+wHrffp_pN0ZCpPBlMArmFw
Love the look. What brand are the lanterns that you have hanging? Are they battery operated?
Thanks!! The lanterns are from Target https://rstyle.me/+B0uOhFndhd3Mkzzakjl8KA . You can put battery operated candles inside.
Totally off topic … where is the ceiling fan on your porch from? We are remodeling, and I’m considering ceiling fans for the new porch!
Not off topic at all! π https://rstyle.me/+PafcCjxRBHQsbOpnAy2YmQ
I love this!! You’ve inspired me to use a more neutral fall decorating scheme this year and I’m super excited about it. I took a look at those plaid pillows and they come in black which is great because I use a black buffalo check table runner for fall/Christmas/winter and those will be perfect to tie that in on our couch. Having a completely open main level is great, but I always feel like something on my table has to match something in my living area.
Ok, first of all, the way those strings lights look turned on in the last few photos is absolutely stunning! I totally need some of those! I am totally on board for the idea of capsule decor items that are neutral and can be used for different seasons by just changing put small things like flowers, pumpkins, acorns, pine cones, branches, stones, shells, or whatever natural (or faux natural) elements suit the season, brilliant! That ivory lumbar pillow is gorgeous, and the little pom poms can totally pass for snowballs into the winter. We are in Oklahoma where we can have very hot weather into September, so get it! Of course, fall doesnβt technically being until later September anyway, but since itβs my favorite season, I like to enjoy it as long as possible. I also agree that the bumpy textured pumpkins are more charming!
Your back porch is lovely.
Beautiful decor! Could you please tell me where you got your bench and chairs from?
THANK YOU!! π These are from World Market. The bench : https://rstyle.me/+uHQDUeSd8Oqh29gjZSI9cg Chairs : https://rstyle.me/+2rqOSQJ2wyevAUuDNbZGgg
Your fall porch is simply lovely! I too have been trying to make my seasonal decor more neutral and have been enjoying the simplicity of it. I love the decking of your porch. Is it a natural wood and what kind is it?
Thank you for the inspiration!
Thank you! π The porch was here when we moved in to the house. It is real wood.
I love the furniture you have on the porch. Are these the exact set you referenced from Walmart? What did you do with the coffee table that comes with the set? Are the seats comfortable. Thank you so much for sharing this info… I have been looking for a good set for my screened in porch.
Your porch is just stunning! I adore everything you do!! My favorite home decor blog by far!!!!
Thank you! You are so sweet! I am happy to have you along our journey.
Oh, it looks pretty, but I do miss the pop of color from a gorgeous iconic traditional orange pumpkin or two. I try to use some neutrals, but want to give a definite nod to the gorgeous burnished orange colors of fall with it. It doesn’t cost any more money to buy an orange pumpkin than a green or white one, after all. Actually, they are cheaper. Nobody ever drove miles out of their way to see the leaves turn neutral! I guess I don’t want to look like I just dipped my toe in fall, ha ha!
Ooh, I do love the orangey pumpkin on the table with the green on it!!
Love, love, love your fall porch, Lauren! As always, you made it beyond gorgeous! I love those napkins, too! Do you have a source for them? Or where you got them?
We’re still sweltering here in North Texas, these temps have got to break soon! LOL
Gorgeous!
Lauren,
I absolutely love your back porch Autumnal decor!
The soft pastels with the PoPs of orange and copper are tranquil.
To me, that’s what Autumn is all about. . .tranquility. A Time to s l o w down.
LOVE that you can get multiple seasons from your pillows and throw blankets!
Spanning the Seasons works for me, too!
Pat
Such a cozy welcoming space- I have major porch envy! Thisβs is a place I see lots of family memories being made. I agree with stretching the decor dollar and making it multi seasonal. And I like the neutrals too. I changed to neutrals last year and went with more natural looking elements, and I left it all in place thru Christmas- added a few red berry stems and voila winter. Ive embraced the simpler side of decor and find it peaceful.
Lauren, you’ve done a wonderful job on your to-die-for awesome porch! I would spend hours out there – it
is magazine worthy perfect!
It finally cooled down a teeny bit last night, so today was one perfect autumnish day/evening. I didn’t want to come back inside after watching the sun set. Love this weather – but unfortunately it only last a nano second.
This is soooo pretty! I love the idea of sticking with neutrals that can move from season to season. I also like to get just the pillow covers to cut down on storage space. Great job Lauren!
Hi Lauren,
LOVE your porch! It’s beautiful!
Please share your source for the end tables/coffee tables? They are stunning!
Thanks so much!
AWE!! Thank you, Peggy. These are from Houzz. https://rstyle.me/+i5w2LnztLwUVnY6EFDwadA
This looks fabulous and I really love the lighting.
Gorgeous overall! I LOVE the wood folding dining set. That would be perfect for our small outdoor space to set up when company is over. Where did you find that set?
Ikea! We love it!
Love your porch! Can you tell me what the dimensions of your porch are? My husband and and I will be building soon!
Thanks! It’s 12×18.
What flooring is your porch? Its beautiful!
Hi!! That porch is absolutely stunning. I tried to follow the links for chairs and tables but look somewhat different. Did you paint them or made any changes? That right there is a dream porch!!! Will keep following you!!!
I am so in love with this porch! I followed the link for the lanterns but it looks like maybe they donβt sell them anymore. How about the hooks you hung them on- did they come with the lanterns or were they a separate purchase?
Oh no, sorry about that. And yes, the hooks were separate!
From target too?
Where are the hooks from? Thank you!
Your porch is beautiful! We just moved into a new house and are remodeling the deck so this is great inspo for the fall! Where did you get the round area rug? Iβve been looking all over for something similar!
It’s sold out, but I found a similar one at this link here!
Love what you did! Where did you get the outdoor rugs?
Here’s a link to one that’s similar to our round one
I couldn’t find the folding table and dining chairs on ikea website. Can you give me a direct link? Thank you, love the final look!
They may not have them anymore. Ikea changes their stuff out so often. Sorry about that!
I can’t find these lanterns any longer on Target — can you give me the dimensions so I can look for other — love the whole porch and ideas you have shared. Thank you
OhMyGoodness. I do not know the dimensions. I am so sorry. Maybe they will come back in stock in the change of seasons.
Thank you!
Beautiful!! Where did you purchase the barrel style end tables? Love them!!!!
Thanks! I got them at TJ Maxx over 4 years ago, so unfortunately, I don’t have a link to them.
I absolutely love your porch and I canβt wait to take some of your ideas onto mine! Where did you get your ceiling fan? I need that!
Thank you, Sarah!! You are so sweet. π The ceiling fans are from Wal-Mart. Here is a link for you. https://rstyle.me/+PafcCjxRBHQsbOpnAy2YmQ
Hi, I was wondering if you have the dimensions for a covered deck this size to fit a table and seating area. Your space is my favourite covered deck. Itβs just beautiful π
I do not know the dimensions off hand. It is very comfortably sized to fit the set table and sitting area with space to walk by to go down the stairs.
