Console Table Makeover and Foyer Reveal

Good or bad, Robert and I are making a joyful noise.

Because our foyer used to look like this last year:

Thanks to some handy Craigslist tricks, a few Goodwill shopping trips, a runner, and a mirror makeover later, we at least had the makings of a room.

But I never really was a big fan of it. I’ve done a lot of soul-searching since we moved into our cookie cutter house in November 2013, and now that I feel like I’m finally understanding my decor style, pulling rooms together has become so much easier. (Modern farmhouse foyer makeover all the way, baby.)

One thing I’d always wanted was shiplap, which was the first big change in this space. From there, everything started to make sense.

After the shiplap wall, the next thing that desperately needed a change was our sad looking console table.

We bought this table for $50 on Craigslist last year. Even though it was the perfect size, the paint job left a lot to be desired.

So when a bunch of blogger friends and I decided to work together for a little furniture makeover party, I knew this table could use the love. Fusion Mineral Paint generously provided us with paint.

I decided on the color Ash because I wanted a big contrast. I love the dimension this paint has. Even though it’s a matte finish, the color has so much depth. This was my first time using this paint, but I’m definitely ready to try it out on more pieces.

I nailed some pine planks on top too and used my usual DIY stain. It turned out even better than I imagined.

So now, our foyer looks like THIS!

For me, I’m always running into pricey decor accessories. I can find a table for under $100 on Craigslist any day of the week, but the little decor items can add up quickly.

I love decorating with old books, which usually cost 50 cents to $1.00 each at thrift stores.

I picked up this cute plant and woven pot at Ikea the other day. I have these little plants everywhere in our house because they’re fairly inexpensive and never fail to make a room come to life. Plus, I kill live plants like you wouldn’t believe. They don’t stand a chance.

Can we just pause a second to appreciate that oh-so-sexy rustic wood tabletop there?

I have been wanting one of these vintage desk fans for so long (which is probably so funny to the people who used to own these brand new back in the day). I found this one on Ebay for $10. It doesn’t work, but I didn’t plan on plugging it in anyway.

Last year on a random thrifting trip, I found this old picnic basket for $2.00 that I knew could be great in the right spot…whenever that spot came along. Before now, it sat in a closet for months until we could finish this foyer.

It had yellowy-orange wood, so I gave it a quick gray wash. It’ll be great for hiding things at the front door like dog leashes, winter gloves, and random items.

I found this metal scroll lamp for $2.00 at Goodwill too. It just needed a new shade, which I picked up at HomeGoods for about $12.

My favorite though is the suitcase under the table that once belonged to my grandparents, which they took with them on their honeymoon over 60 years ago.

I’m so excited to have this bright space to greet everyone as they walk in our front door now. It looks right at home with our dining room rope chandelier, don’t ya think?
