Why ditching traditional fall colors is a better decorating decision to stretch your dollars + the best neutral fall greenery and decor on sale.
Fact: I don’t own a single piece of orange decor right now.
Also fact: Even though fall is quickly approaching, I’m not mad about Fact #1.
And when you hear my reason, maybe you’ll be with me on this too.
I’ve been in this phase lately of screaming, “Minimalize all the things!”
We’re still cranking out declutter mode over here (and in the Bless’er House Facebook Group) week by week to purge the crazy.
I’ve taught myself that less is more when it comes to mantel decorating (and really lots of other surfaces at this point too).
And you know what else? I’m slowing my roll on the pumpkin spice and everything nice train this year.
Wanna know why? By sticking to neutral fall decor…
- It costs less money in the long run.
- It takes up less storage space in the fall off-season.
- It gives me flexibility to use the decor I already have in endless combinations.
- It requires less time and energy in seasonal redecorating.
So since Wayfair and its related brand Birch Lane asked me to grab a few pieces from their Labor Day Sale and inform y’all about it because it’s one of my favorite home decor and furniture sites, I figured now was a good time to declare war on orange and hug a (faux) tree.

Because I have to be honest, as much as I try, I’m not an orange fan. I like pumpkins, but truthfully they make sense for only 2 months out of the year whereas greenery works year-round (even a chunk of it on into Christmas).
So how can I say, “Make wise decisions about your decorating purchases and spend where your money can stretch over the course of the entire year” and then blow hundreds of dollars on fall-specific orange decorations that will be out of season within weeks?
Nope. I’m not gonna roll like that. This year is different.
Because if you’re strategic about your decor and opt for good quality pieces that work year-round for any season, you almost cheat the system when it comes to fall decorating.
This year I picked up this faux Japanese maple tree I’ve had in my Birch Lane shopping cart since April. And you know what? It rocks as fall decor.
You know what’s even better?
It’s a classic that can stay in that corner for 11 months out of the year so I can get every single dollar’s worth.
These faux olive branches work 365 days of the year. Surround it with pops of red and boom! Fall morphs later into Christmas like it’s nothin’.
And you know the other perk?
They won’t ever die. I don’t have to remember to water a plant AND take care of the kids. I can’t do both, ‘kay?
I don’t have to worry about a giant mess it’ll make when the leaves fall off as it slips into a sad demise, like all of my real plants inevitably do.
And when it comes to this little faux nandina tree, I don’t have to worry about my almost 1 year-old dumping dirt out of the pot onto the floor and throwing it around like confetti because there is no dirt to worry about when it comes to the fake version.
But what I love about all three of them – the maple tree, the olive branches, the nandina tree…
They all LOOK real and have a designer quality, which is one of the things I love about the decor from Birch Lane.
So there it is. That’s my fall epiphany this year. The green is here to stay and the orange can take a hike.

To each their own, of course, you should never feel the need to apologize or think you are weird for liking something different. We are all unique and should do what we love without caring if it’s “in” or whatever. With that being said, I love the idea of using more neutral items for the holidays that can be used year around, as opposed to as much season specific decor, but I still love the warm colors of fall. I currently use a lot of color in my home, but we are building a new home and I plan to keep the backgrounds more neutral and use color mostly in the form of accessories. I also prefer to keep it a little more neutral and sophisticated and go a little more colorful with the outdoor decor on the porch. When it comes to fall decor, I have really come to love the use of accessories that are in warm metals like bronze, antique brass and copper, and also terra cotta, which is more subdued version of orange. Rougher textures like those found in baskets, chunky knit throws, wheat stalks, woven fringed pillows, etc. really help add to the fall look. Curious, what happened to the vintage bench that was in your foyer (that looked like a wagon seat or something like that)?
Love this post and your minimalistic approach. Makes awesome sense from both a time and money perspective. I never like red and green in my house at Christmas time, so I transitioned to neutrals with a sparkle here and there and I love it.
I might have an alternative that will give everyone some food for thought. In my town, we have a few small thrift stores for used items. One of them sells quality items at VERY cheap prices. Proceeds benefit local families in need and, since I was one of those families once, I donate every chance I get. They have plenty of storage space for seasonal items. If I really want something for a particular holiday, it’s affordable at this shop and when I’m done I can ‘donate’ it back. You can think of the money spent as renting the item or your donation to the organization. Like I said, it’s just food for thought.
I like the neutral decor but I don’t know why you call it seasonal if you leave it out all year. I think the reality is that most of us are tired of the over the top decorations and wasting tons of money on it. A reasonable amount of fall decorating that I will do will do nicely until Thanksgiving when we decorate for Christmas.
I feel like these green plants work well for fall as well as other times of year but not the other way around because not all green plants work well for fall. Like a palm tree or tropical plant, to me, seems summery and would be out of place in October/November. So I figured maybe it would help to share the faux plants that do fit in with fall. Not sure if that makes sense at all. Haha!
