Proof That Brass Decor Is Still Totally Timeless

I was installing a little brass “no soliciting” sign on our front door this week when it hit me: I’m officially on a brass kick.
It’s not like I planned it, but looking around our house lately, the signs are everywhere (pun not intended… but also kind of intended).

A few years ago, I added a small brass plaque to our powder room door that says “rest room” in fancy lettering—just a subtle little detail to help guests find their way without having to ask.

Then we swapped out the handle on our glass shower door for a vintage-style brass door knob, and it instantly made the whole bathroom feel more intentional.

Then there are the brass stair dust corners we recently added: those tiny triangular pieces that tuck into the corners of each stair tread.
They’re super easy to install, help keep dirt out of corners, and give off serious Victorian vibes. I didn’t even know they existed until I stumbled on them… and now I want them on every staircase forever.

And just to seal the deal, Robert recently installed a brass toilet paper holder in the bathroom. A little detail, but it feels like something you’d find in an old historic inn… charming and practical at the same time.

All of our outlet covers and light switch plates have slowly been swapped out for brass too.

So yeah. The brass is spreading. It’s not everyone’s style, but it’s definitely my jam.
And honestly? I’m not mad about it.
Even though some designers are predicting that brass might be on its way out again, I think when you use it in the right ways, brass decor can feel completely timeless. It adds warmth and character that most modern materials just don’t have.
If you’re tempted to try the look, here are some of my favorite easy-to-add brass decor ideas that can instantly make your home feel more vintage and thoughtful:

Vintage Brass Decor Ideas to Try
- Brass “no soliciting” or directional plaques – Functional and charming.
- Stair dust corners – A tiny detail with major old-house energy.
- Brass doorknobs, hinges, and latches – They don’t scream for attention but definitely make a space feel elevated.
- Cabinet hardware – Swap out knobs and pulls for brass to instantly upgrade a dresser or vanity.
- Brass light switch covers or outlet plates – So much prettier than plastic.
- Antique-style wall hooks or coat racks – Equal parts practical and pretty.
- Vintage brass frames or mirrors – Adds a collected, heirloom feel.
- Candlesticks or sconces – Especially beautiful with a bit of age and patina.
Brass Rub n Buff
And even if you don’t want to buy new, Rub n Buff works like a charm on a lot of things. I’ve used it on light fixtures, door hinges, even exposed pipes.

Here is my Rub n Buff color guide to help you find the right gold / brass tone (my favorite is European Gold).

Brass decor might not always be the trendiest choice, but when it’s done well, it feels storied and special… like it’s always belonged. And the best part is most of these ideas take under 10 minutes to install but add charm that lasts for years.
Now I just need to resist the urge to brass-ify the entire house. (No promises.)

Love all your charming brass touches! As a 70’s kid, I’ve seen it all, from the antiqued brass, to shiny brass in the 80’s and 90’s (when I sold home interiors, there was SO MUCH high polished brass!), to trading out brass for brushed nickel and bronze in the early 2000’s, and then the matte gold trend from a few years ago. I know not every one likes gold/brass, but I decorate a lot like you in a classic traditional style mixed with some rustic/cottage and I’ve been loving antique brass the past few years as well. Of course, there is a lot to be found in thrift and antique stores! It’s been fun seeing your home and style evolve over the years that I’ve followed you and I love the changes you have made recently, thanks for sharing!
Haha! Yep it’s a never-ending cycle. All the more reason to stick with what brings you joy. Thank you, Vicki! That means a lot to me.
I think your brass accents are charming and suit your decor. We can’t follow trends. They are always changing and that is not sustainable.
Exactly! Might as well stick with what you love. We’ll never be “caught up” with trends anyway.
