What to Put on a Coffee Table: My Go-To Decorating Toolkit

The other day, Olivia (whoโs 13 now!) and I spent the afternoon antiquing in Charlotte, and I came home with a few little treasures I couldnโt wait to style on our living room coffee table (also a past vintage find).
Iโve always believed a coffee table can tell the story of a home. Itโs the spot for morning coffee and little collections that make a room feel lived-in. It’s the perfect place to show your personality (because what you display says a lot about you), but it also needs to be functional with opportunities for small storage.
If youโve ever wondered what to put on a coffee table, think of this post as your coffee table decorating formula in shopping-list form, full of items that layer beautifully together for any style or season.

The Coffee Table Decorating Toolkit
Hereโs what I always keep in my styling โtoolboxโ: a mix of textures, shapes, and materials that make any coffee table feel collected and intentional.
1. A Large Tray
Your foundation piece! It keeps everything organized and gives smaller decor a home. Rattan, marble, or wood trays all work beautifully.
2. Greenery or Flowers
Fresh stems, a petite plant, or realistic faux branches add instant life. Nothing beats a little green moment on a table in a simple glass vase.
3. A Stack of Coffee Table Books
The secret to height, color, and character. Mix art, travel, or design books with pretty covers and spines that suit your palette. Check the book section at the thrift store! I find so many there!
4. A Candle (and a Candle Snuffer)
The easiest way to make your table feel cozy and lived-in. Choose a scent that matches the season and a beautiful vessel youโll love to display. I like to stick to neutral ones just so I have the flexibility to stick them anywhere with any color palette.
5. A Small Decorative Object
This is your personality piece, maybe a brass animal figurine, sculptural knot, or interesting artifact from your travels. Itโs the thing that sparks a smile every time you walk by. The more unexpected the better.

6. A Smaller Tray or Catch-All Box
Layered inside or next to your larger tray, itโs perfect for TV remotes, coasters, a stack of photos (or your 7 year-old kid’s pocket rock collection). Bonus: it keeps clutter looking stylish.

A few of my favorite finds that work beautifully together:
- Large rattan tray
- Clear glass vase
- Faux leafy stems (olive stems and magnolia branches are especially great for year-round if I don’t want to deal with storage in the off-season)
- Brass figurine
- Coffee table books
- Soy candle
- Vintage-style candle snuffer
- Small silver catchall tray

When you have these basics, you can mix and match endlessly; swap greenery for seasonal flowers, trade the dish for a bowl of ornaments in winter, or rotate your books for a new look.
