Budget-Friendly Ralph Lauren Christmas Decorating Ideas (Without the Luxe Price Tag)
If there’s one holiday trend having a moment this year, it’s the Ralph Lauren style Christmas. And honestly, I’m not mad about it one bit.

I’ve always loved that classic Americana look: rich colors, equestrian touches, cozy textures, and the kind of timeless Christmas charm that feels like a warm hug by a crackling fireplace.
Plus… fun fact: Robert + Lauren = RL. So maybe we were destined for this moment all along.
But as much as I adore the luxe Ralph Lauren aesthetic, I don’t adore the luxury price tag. So this year, I challenged myself to create the same elevated look in our living room without spending a fortune working mostly with that I already had.

It’s totally doable. Small details make a big impact, and most of these changes are either inexpensive or simply swaps you can make using what you already own.
Here’s how to get the look…
1. Mix Red Roses Into Your Winter Stems
This one small trick instantly elevates an arrangement. I found a bundle of 50 super realistic faux roses for less than $35. They look so real! I tucked a bunch into some pine stems I had, and it instantly felt editorial and festive. It’s that little pop of luxury without the price tag.

2. Add a Few Touches of Silver
Nothing says “heritage holiday” like polished silver. You don’t need a huge collection, just a tray or two creates that Ralph Lauren mood. I see them at the thrift store for crazy cheap ALL THE TIME! All they usually need is a good polish. Here are a few vintage style silver pieces I rounded up.
A few of mine belonged to my grandmother, and I love knowing this piece of her is part of our Christmas memories this year. Heirlooms always win.

3. Bring In Tartan Plaid (In a Smart Way)
Listen, I’m not buying an entire collection of new plaid décor just because it’s trending. But ribbon? I buy new ribbon every year anyway, so that’s where I make the swap.
A spool or two of tartan plaid ribbon instantly sets the tone without overcommitting.
I added plaid ribbon to:
- Our tree
- The mantel garland
- The wreaths on our windows
And I pulled in a plaid throw blanket I had. Check thrift stores for plaid tablecloths too! They show up pretty often on my thrifting trips.

4. Add Velvet for Texture + Warmth
Velvet is non-negotiable for a Ralph Lauren style Christmas.
Think:
- Velvet bows
- Velvet ornaments
- Velvet Christmas tree skirt
- A velvet throw pillow
- Or even a velvet game board (I got a burgundy velvet backgammon board that looks SO handsome on the coffee table)
A little velvet = a lot of richness.

5. Stick to a Classic, Rich Color Palette
This is where the RL magic really happens. Go for deep, moody, timeless tones:
- Burgundy
- Hunter green
- Navy blue
- Brass accents
- Pops of red
Good news for us: we painted our mantel navy blue a few months ago (Benjamin Moore Temptation), and it pairs beautifully with this color palette. Honestly, navy goes with everything anyway. It’s the unsung neutral hero.

6. Layer in Cozy Lighting
Ralph Lauren interiors always feel warm, and it’s because they’re never relying on one big ceiling light.
In our living room, we scattered:
- Lamps with traditional silhouettes (These stick lamps have major RL vibes.)
- Candles
- Picture lights (This plug-in picture light is my fave.)
- A crackling fire
- Even battery-operated candle lights clipped on the tree and wreaths
If your room feels a little flat, the answer is almost always more lighting.

7. Add Vintage-Style Ornaments for Extra Sparkle
Mercury glass ornaments are my go-to because they add instant heritage charm and they work with any color palette. They’re neutral, reflective, and a little romantic.
I mixed in:
It’s classic, nostalgic, and totally Ralph Lauren.

8. Incorporate Equestrian or “Country House” Touches
A few more ideas to dial in the look:
- A stack of books (especially leather-bound ones)
- Brass candlesticks
- Crystal accents
- A cozy plaid throw tossed over an armchair
- A small bowl of chestnuts or pinecones
- A nutcracker (Ours is silver too that I found last year!)
- Mismatched cream cable-knit stockings
- Lush, cedar garland that drapes dramatically
Nothing needs to match perfectly; mixing textures and finishes is what makes it feel collected over time.

9. Keep the Greenery Full + Lush
The RL style leans traditional and slightly dramatic. So I went bold with:
- A full Christmas tree wrapped in golden twinkle lights
- Lush window wreaths tied with plaid ribbon
- A thick cedar garland across the mantel
Even faux greenery looks high-end when it’s full and layered.

10. Create a Cozy Hearth Moment
A Ralph Lauren Christmas practically requires a roaring fire, so if you have a fireplace, dress it up:
- Navy blue mantel (or any rich color)
- Classic garland
- A plaid bow
- Cable-knit stockings
- Candles
- Silver accents
It instantly transforms the whole room.

11. Incorporate Equestrian Details (The Secret Sauce)
Nothing says Ralph Lauren quite like subtle equestrian touches. You don’t need saddles and riding boots, just a few nods to the theme.
This year I added:
- Equestrian art on our Samsung Frame TV (it looks like a real framed painting!)
- A horse statue I already owned on the sofa table
These elements add that refined, country-house charm that the RL brand is known for. They’re classic, stately, and instantly elevate the whole room.

You don’t need a designer budget to create a Ralph Lauren–inspired Christmas. Focus on the details: rich colors, timeless textures, cozy lighting, and a few heirloom touches and the whole room starts to feel elevated and intentional.

This look is warm, classic, and incredibly inviting… which is exactly what Christmas should be. Don’t run out to buy a bunch of new things. Look around your home to see what you already have that could weave into your garland and Christmas tree.

I loved this article, thank you. I’m going to change my decorating style this Christmas and incorporate a lot of your ideas. It actually means a lot less work for me, as I have a lot of the things you recommend using already on display in my navy blue sitting room. I even have a red velvet Laura Ashley sofa. I have gorgeous Irish wool tartan throws too. It will just mean weaving greenery, tartan and bows in amongst those things.❤️
That’s sounds perfect! I’m so glad it was helpful!
You have a stunning home and I love every single thing you have added for Christmas. x
Thank you, Janette!
Very Lovely! Thank you for always inspiring. I tried some navy blue velvet ribbon this year and it’s so pretty when the lights are on. Thanks Lauren!
Sounds beautiful!
Love this; beautiful and not over the top decorating. I always admire your under stated elegance in decorating. I would love to know what is the top rug in the living room? It appears to balance all of the colors in the living room.
Thank you! Here’s the link to the rug: https://rstyle.me/+ZK1OwlLp5woi9K4LbUy9Tw
I love this post so much. We’re in the process of downsizing right now & I’ll have a fireplace for the very first time to decorate for Christmas & cannot wait. I’ve been seeing the RL aesthetic everywhere lately & didn’t think I’d like it, but you’ve given me a whole new perspective. I’ll definitely try working in some of your details into my own decorating this year to see how it looks.
Thank you, Diana! Hope you enjoy decorating that new fireplace!
