You want to know the absolute greatest DIY secret on the planet?
I’m talkin’ complete painting-frenzy game-changer here:
The “Don’t Stop Believin'” Pandora Radio station.
It’s true. Snow White’s seven dwarves who whistled while they worked? They were onto something.
So 80s rock jams are officially the soundtrack of our master bedroom makeover…
UPDATE: See our full master bedroom makeover reveal here!
Anytime Robert and I bust out the power tools or paint brushes, Journey or Queen is blaring throughout the room.
We make it a dance / DIY date, usually with Olivia jumping on the bed along with our tunes.
So last week, while I was sharing Part 1 for how we built our DIY planked board and batten focal wall, I was caulking and painting away like a mad woman.
I looooove (okay, erm…really really likity like) how it turned out!
I went with the color Sherwin Williams Alabaster in semi-gloss for the planked wall, and I think it might be my favorite shade of white ever. It’s the perfect creamy white, not too stark white and not too yellowy, just right.
A few years ago, if you had asked me what my favorite shade of white was, I would have looked at you like you had three eyeballs on your head. It’s bonkers how many white shades are out there and how completely different they can look in a room.
The Alabaster paint doesn’t match our bathroom and closet doors at all, but those are about to get switched out for something fancier anyway.
We’re nowhere close to being finished in here, and we already have more updates to show you guys, but this is really the first step that has felt like a big leap.
I already have a pretty good idea what I want to hang over our bed, but I’m curious, what would you put there? A mirror? Art? Faux taxidermy? Wreath? Leave it blank?
After having our duvet for over two years, I finally picked up this ticking stripe one at Ikea last week. Our bedding feels so much more luxurious with that extra weight now.
Here’s where we are on the ol’ checklist:
- DONE: Paint walls (Benjamin Moore Moonshine)
- DONE: Install planked board and batten wall
- Change hardware on dresser
- Install window trim
- Install crown moulding
- Refinish barn doors
- Hang barn doors
- Change out lamps
- Hang decor over bed
- Replace blinds with bamboo shades?
- Hang curtains
- Buy area rug
- Change out mirror
- Paint a gray wash on bed?
Whew! Yep… still a long way to go. But it’s nothing a little power tool jam sesh to “Bohemian Rhapsody” can’t fix. 😉
UPDATE! You can check out more about all of the projects and makeovers that went into our master bedroom here:
So what do you think? Are you loving it as much as we do? Do you have a favorite 80s rock jam all us DIYers should add to our playlist? Or a favorite Pandora station??

It turned out great, Lauren! I can’t wait to see what else you do in your room. I have to let you in on a chuckle though. When you asked what you should hang above the bed, all I saw at the moment was the top of the picture with the ceiling fan in it. So, since what I saw was the ceiling fan, I at first thought you were asking what sort of light fixture to hang above the bed. I about fell over when you mentioned a mirror! So, y’all go ahead and hang a mirror on the ceiling. Can’t wait to see the blog post about that. hahahaha
Bahahaha! Okay, back up. Maybe I should say, “What should I hang over our headboard?” That’s WILD! Hahaha!
Love the wall. I am really enjoying following you as you personalize your home. Great work.
Thanks so much, Stacy!!! I’m really enjoying sharing our adventures. 🙂
Love your bedroom. Absolutely gorgeous. I really love your ceiling fan/light fixture. Where did you find that beauty?
Thanks, Patricia! We got the fan about 2-3 years ago at Lowe’s, but it’s been discontinued. It’s called Angora by Harbor Breeze. I found a bunch of others that are really great too though since I get asked about it quite a bit. Here’s my list of those if you need an alternate: https://www.blesserhouse.com/2015/07/10-stylish-non-boring-ceiling-fans.html
BAHAHAHAHA! I have an 80’s/early 90’s Rock playlist for when I’m working too!!! I vote for taxidermy above the bed!
We always put on the Guns N Roses Pandora station, you could always add that as a variety to yours 😉 I’d leave over the bed blank because the headboard is pretty tall and between it and the wall you’ve got a good bit of texture already. But that’s just me.
Haha! Yes! Guns N Roses and ACDC and Van Halen and all of the classics. I’m thinking about leaving it blank too for exactly the same reasons. We’ll see if I can handle the minimalism approach…I usually suck at it. Thanks, girl!
Love the transformation thus far!!! From the looks of your “to do” list and your design board, the room is going to have somewhat of a rustic feel…. Whatever hangs above the bed shouldn’t be so big that it takes away from the batten and planks and it should be rustic…. I like the mirror idea. I also like the lamps and wondered if they would “fit in” more if you painted them in another , more rustic color?! Just a thought…. Can’t wait to see the complete transformation…
Thanks, Lanita! It definitely will have a rustic feel with a modern twist. That’s a good idea about the lamps. My main concern is I think they might be a bit too tall since they’re higher than the headboard. But it might just be me trying to get used to the changes. We’ll see. Always love your input, Lanita. 🙂
This turned out soooooo good!! I love that is just adds that bit of detail to the back wall and gives it some seriously awesome character. Bravo!
Thanks, Kristin! I’m excited to see it all come together.
It looks great! Can’t wait to see the barn doors you talked about!!! As far as my 2 cents as to what to put over the bed, have you seen Joanna Gaines calligraphy-script-vinyl/painted-wall-art she used throughout her home? I don’t know, I always default to that… But, nothing at all I think looks great, too! I’m going to show this to my hippie-man who makes fun of me for liking “everything white” (because he likes COLOR on an unhealthy level) to hopefully bring him over to the “farmhouse” style I love so much!! Thanks for the inspiration and awesome posts!!!!
Oh yeah! That’s a good idea. I had to laugh out loud at your “hippie-man” situation. Too funny!
Love your wall!!! We were going to do the exact same thing -Jenna Sue design – in SW Alabaster 🙂 so thankful I have a pic to show hubby and you guys did an awesome job!
Yay! Glad I get to help in the convincing of the hubs. May the sweet talking force be with you. 😉
The wall is awesome, but you’re playing the wrong Pandora station – Decades 60’s is THE station to “dance” through all those DIY projects (guess it’s a generational thing). ?
Oooh okay, maybe it’s a tie. Definitely love me some oldies to jam to. 😉
It looks amazing! Great job! A mirror….laughing so hard right now. You’re hilarious!!!
Hahaha! Maybe I should have phrased that as “mirror over the headboard”. We like our 80s rock, but we’re not quiiiiite that rock n roll. Bahahaha!
I am so with you on the 80’s rock station jamming! It’s hard not to work up a frenzy to Bohemian Rhapsody! Room is looking fabulous. I do like that soft Alabaster white. Stay motivated!
Totally agree! Rock sesh all the way. 🙂 Thanks so much, Marcia!
This turned out amazing, Lauren! It makes me want to put a plank wall in one of our bedrooms. I would totally throw a big grapevine or boxwood wreath up there, but it really doesn’t need much!
Thanks so much, Melanie! Looks like I’ll have to try a boxwood. That seems to be the general consensus.
turned out so great! Love a little music to give me the strength I need to paint, paint, paint!
Thanks, Ashlea! Totally agree. It makes it all go so much faster.
It looks great! Good job! I clean house to 80’s butt-rock…it makes it go faster and I sing along to all the songs!
Yes! Me too! Makes everything better. 🙂
I love your feature wall. A boxwood wreath would look nice above the bed.
Thanks, Dianne! Might have to try that.
I agree with Diane a boxwood wreath would look gorgeous over the bed. Or maybe a rustic love quote? The room looks amazing so far. Honestly I like your lamps in the space. Can’t wait to see your finished product! And seriously who doesn’t love an 80’s Jam session while you work!? 🙂
Thanks so much for the input, Hope! I’ll definitely have to try out a wreath or two since I already happen to have a few.
I love alabaster white. I use it all the time for furniture pieces. Over the bed…a wreath? Already enough light and nothing that would fall and hurt you two. Although a picture of you two or a tree with your initials carved in it. One of my favorite sayings for our ‘couple’ picture is, “The Best Things in life to hold onto is each other”.
Oh very true. I’d be much more okay with a wreath attacking me in my sleep than a piece of hanging art or something. Haha! Love that quote! Thanks so much for the ideas, Sylvia. 🙂
Wow! This wall is absolutely beautiful. I’m renting right now and so bummed that I can’t just re-create this in my bedroom RIGHT NOW. Great job on the wall, very inspiring! 🙂
Thanks, Meredith! Totally been there before. Makes you appreciate it even more when the day comes that you can tear your place apart and a landlord won’t bat an eye…just maybe your husband. Haha!
Great idea on that Pandora station! I love your night stands in the master, it’s looking great. Can’t wait to follow along on the rest of the makeover.
Thank you! We got the nightstands at Nadeau last year. I’m completely hooked on that store. 🙂 Thanks so much for the follow!
It really looks great so far. I’d say to leave the board wall the way it is and don’t hang anything over the bed. Less is more.
Luv the ceiling fan, pretty and functional.
Thanks for the input, Wendy! I’m definitely thinking about leaving it blank too. I’m not always good at minimalism.
Fabulous wall, Lauren!! I love it – we have B&B behind our bed too but without the planking. I love the extra feature it adds to the headboard wall. And the moonshine is so pretty- we painted our entire rental house in Moonshine and I think I want to use in this house too! (but shhhhh – I haven’t broken that to the hubs yet). Happy Friday!
Ooh yes! I love that wall of yours, Krista! I almost went that route. I’m with you- Moonshine is one of my faves too. Your secret’s safe with me. 😉
I am in l o v e. That is all.
Thanks, girl!!
I just stumbled across your blog and I love your style! I really like the planked walls and glam farmhouse look, and I like how you added the extra vertical beams. I think it makes it stand out from all the other planked walls I’ve seen. So gorgeous!
Aw thank you so much, Elizabeth! So glad you’re enjoying my little corner over here. 🙂
Love your blog! Been following you for a little while, I love how you are transforming your builder grade home in the burbs. Me too. I have already started my own window trim upgrades throughout my house like you did. One room at a time….I have to say though, I really like your lamps on your side tables. If I lived near you I would happily take those off your hands! But since I’m in Colorado, maybe you could tell me where you purchased those? Thanks!
Aw thank you so much, Gayleen! I’m so glad you’re enjoying our little adventures. 🙂 I would totally sell the lamps to you if you lived closeby. I found them at HomeGoods a bit over 2 years ago. Who knows; they might have them.
Beautiful bedroom! I love the plank wall. I agree with a previous comment on leaving the wall blank, adding something else may take away from what is already gorgeous.
As a side note, we have decided that hanging things over our bed is a no-no. We had a beautiful print framed @ a well known craft store. Little did we know that they didn’t put strong enough mounting hardware in it. One night while we were sleeping the framed print came crashing down on us. Shards of glass, 6″ to 8″, were stuck in our pillows & mattress. He took the brunt of it with cuts in his scalp & neck! Your planked wall is a great solution for us! Thank-you!
Oh my gosh! That’s terrifying! I’m so glad you’re okay! We did hang something above our bed this week but I’m scared now. Woah! We anchored our wall decor to a stud at least. I’m hoping that will be okay.
I am head over heels in love with your decorating style and simply must get your same ceiling fan. Where did you get it? Brand? Model? Or did you make it and the gorgeous drum light kit yourself? Thank so much for letting us enjoy your room with you.
Cathleen
Thank you, Cathleen! We bought it at Lowe’s a couple years ago. It’s called Angora by Harbor Breeze but it’s been discontinued. 🙁 I get asked about it quite a bit though, so I rounded up similar ones if you need ideas: https://www.blesserhouse.com/2015/07/10-stylish-non-boring-ceiling-fans.html
Lauren, its so pretty! Has the ‘shiplap’ look! (oh so in right now) Quick story my best friend and I locked ourselves into the office in high school, turned on the intercom and sang an OUTSTANDING performance of Bohemian Rhapsody! Acapella!! We got away with slap on wrist..Til couple weeks later on Monday…Our attempt to encourage school to watch Monday Night Football (‘are you ready for some football, a Monday night party’ etc.) smh did NOT go over well! ha
P.S. I would Pinterest Shiplap wall to get inspiration for décor!
Hahahaha! That. is. awesome!
I love the ceiling fan and light. Where did you find it?
Thank you, Kathi! We got it at Lowe’s a couple years ago, but it’s been discontinued. 🙁 I rounded up a bunch of other fun ones though if you need other ideas: https://www.blesserhouse.com/2015/07/10-stylish-non-boring-ceiling-fans.html Hope that helps!
I just came across this post, linked from a different post, and realized we have the same exact lamps as our master bedroom bedside lamps! Cool! 🙂
🙂
