Living Room Update: Ceiling Fan Swap
Since busting out the paint cans and rollers in our living room a few weeks ago, I set out on a massive ceiling fan hunt. Like no-turning-back-til-the-perfect-one-smacks-me-in-the-face kind of hunt. I know ceiling fans get a bad rap for being all “womp-womp”, but the one we finally chose has turned out to be the cherry on top of our living room. And it’s a miiiiighty purdy cherry.
I have a confession though. I splurged. Which I never ever ever do.
But with using only half of our budget we alotted for living room furniture by finding an amazing set at IKEA, reusing a rug we already owned from our old master bedroom, massively transforming the entire room with just a couple of coats of paint, and using really inexpensive Craigslist finds for the rest of the space, Robert convinced me to choose what I really wanted.
And I could not get this Caneel Bay fan by Casablanca out of my head, so I didn’t really put up a fight.
(Pay no mind to the wild cord situation on the mantel and the dirty brick. We’re working on that.)
Once this fan was installed, it was like a brand new room in here. I mean… I know the paint and furniture helps a lot but that little piece of ceiling candy is somethin’ else.
Don’t let this room fool you. All of the other rooms in the house are absolute chaos with stacked boxes and scattered tools and Rubbermaid bins exploding all over the place, but I’m so relieved to have a space where we can escape at the end of the day.
It’s still hard to believe it looked so different a month ago…
It was completely by accident that the raw wood blades of the fan match our gallery wall frames perfectly! (I shared the free printable set of those botanicals earlier this week if you want to snag them for one of your walls.)
We’ve been able to wrap up most of our breakfast nook too, which you can see a little peek of here…
I’ll share more about all of that later though.

- Hang curtains? (Still undecided on that)
- Lime wash or German smear the brick fireplace
But for now we’ll probably be taking a break on this space until we get a few more rooms painted and furniture in place and boxes unpacked. Fair warning: if you come over, you might be put to work. 😉
Hi!! I LOVE this room! So beautiful, amazing work. Can you tell me where you got the wall planter? I love it and need something like that. Unfortunately, I haven’t found one that I like as much as the one pictured. Are those fake plants or did you put your own plants in there?

Hi, Stephanie!! The wall planter is featured in a DIY tutorial https://www.blesserhouse.com/antique-banister-wall-planter/ in a previous post. And, it is perfect for every season. We just switch out seasonal plants or decor. The GREAT thing about it (and one of my tricks) is you can use real or fake plants. Let me know how yours turns out!!

Hi ! I am dying to know more about your ceiling height and the size of your tv and the height of the ceiling fan ! I have the exavr same set up . Couch facing tv on top of brick and white mantle fireplace! My burning question is does the ceiling fan block the tv if you are looking at the tv from the room looking on to the living room? We are looking to get a bigger tv to fill the space above the fireplace more but worry that putting a ceiling fan will see glare when on and watching the tv. I can’t decide bc I really want to put a ceiling fan . I have only 8 foot ceilings and a 50 inch tv would fill the space above fireplace and make it look more centered.
Hi Maria! Our ceilings are 8 feet, and our TV is 50″. The ceiling fan doesn’t block the TV at all if I’m standing up and looking at the TV from behind the couch. But I’m 5’7″, so my height might play a factor. My husband is my height as well. For someone 6 feet or taller, that might get annoying. We don’t really have an issue with glare either, but we have an Ultra HD, so I don’t know if that screen is different from others in terms of glare. Hoping that helps. 🙂 We love our set up and thankfully our mantel isn’t so crazy high that we get any sort of neck pain from that angle. Some people have that concern if their mantel is particularly tall.
I have 8ft ceilings, but think I can hang this to a length to allow for someone 6.5 in to walk under or close. What are your ceilings height? I just opened a wall up but the room used to be 14×12, not very big. Now it is opened to dining room and wonder if I can pull off this size? I have been looking at fans for months and I don’t like any other than this one. I should probably fine a 42-48″ but I love this!
Our ceilings are 8 feet too, and a 6.5 person can just squeak by walking under it. But it’s positioned right above our couch, so it’s not a place where someone would generally stand anyway. I’m 5’7″ and there’s at least a foot of space between the top of my head and the bottom of the light.
56″ when I lay it out is pretty wide given the width of our room is 11ft, the length is long 18. Thinking I may go with a smaller 48″-52″. Wish they made this in a mini size!
