Winter Living Room & My Favorite Winter Decor

4 decor elements every room needs to create a warm, cozy, vibrant space for winter and year-round, plus how to add life to a neutral palette.

I walked into HomeGoods the other day and saw spring decor EVERYWHERE (what?) so… maybe your girl here is late to the winter decorating party. Whatever. 😉

Can I tell you a secret though?! Winter and spring decor can totally live together in harmony. There is no rule that says you have to use pine branches and leafless stems in January and February. (There’s also no rule that says you have to follow ANY decor trend. You do you, boo. Decorate with the things that brings you joy!)

Do you know how long it takes to put your house back together after the Christmas decorations come down? Forever and eternity plus one more day and then throw in one more eternity if you also live with a toddler.

But I finally got it together over here, and truth be told, I think our winter living room will transition perfectly into the spring months.

4 decor elements every room needs to create a warm, cozy, vibrant space for winter and year-round, plus how to add life to a neutral palette.

In the past, I’ve been “Team Keep the Evergreens” until March, but this year, I was craving bright leafy green plants alongside cozy candles and a blazing fire.

A warm, inviting atmosphere and a fresh start. That’s all I could ever really want in our home right now after the year we had.

So if you’ve found yourself feeling stuck in how to decorate for the winter months, I hope this helps a little bit.

My Favorite Winter Decor

1. Candles and Fire

That sounds so awesome. Decorate with FIIIIIIRE! (Cue the maniacal laugh.) But in the dark winter months, there’s nothing that makes our home feel more inviting than a cozy fire and glowing candles.

These are some of my favorites.

2. Green branches and plants

Flowers say “spring” to me, but houseplants are forever. I’ll admit, I don’t have the most green thumb in the world, and I don’t like fighting the dirt-throwing, leaf-picking battle with my 2 year-old anyway (maybe when she’s older). So a few artificial leafy branches in a vase, potted houseplants, and a tree makes a room come to life. Bonus points if you can handle the real kind.

These are some of my favorite faux stems and plants to use in winter or year-round.

3. Use warm, heavy textiles.

I love incorporating wool, faux fur, sweater knit, mohair, velvet and any other soft, warm throw pillows and blankets to curl up with by the fire. It’s the perfect nod to winter. To me, blue and green are the perfect neutral color. They appear in nature year-round in every season, so it can be used in decor year-round too without feeling out of place. When you’re feeling stuck, green and blue are your friends.

4. Say yes to texture.

Woven baskets, raw wood, ceramics, and metallics all add dimension to a room so that it feels inviting. If you have a neutral space that feels “boring” or “cold”, introduce different elements of texture to see if that helps (don’t forget the plants).

Winter Decor in a Living Room

I rounded up some of my favorite winter decor items in case you need help adding a cozy vibe to your home. There’s nothing like a few little room changes to make a big impact on your mood in the cold of winter. And maybe, it’ll tie us over just long enough until spring.

  1. Hello Again Lauren,
I love your entire room. If I could I would copy everything! Would you please tell me if the Ikea chairs are comfortable? I want two comfy chairs for hubby and me to watch tv from. I would probably add an ottoman in front of each. Thank you so much!

  2. I always love everything you do, so this is no different, because I know, (with excitement) as I start to open up your emails, I will always be blowing away. Guest what? I am blowing away. So fabulous.
I have a question though, How/where did you and your husband hide your tv cords? We have our tv hanging above the mantle, but ugly cords also hanging down to. Help!!!

  3. Lauren … you have a lovely living room … I love your wicker coffee table. I looked at Bed Bath & Beyond from your link but the wicker looks very dark (sand?).. Can you lead me to a similar table like yours? I am going to tackle limewashing our fireplace! Yikes! I’m scared!

  4. Your home is beautiful as always! I’m honestly still working on getting my Christmas decor down, but it’s almost done! Partly because I’m in a new home and trying to be intentional about what decor I’m keeping/donating and organizing and storing it in a better way, rather than just throwing it in tubs. Thanks for sharing! You’re an inspiration! Also, per your recommendation, I bought green velvet drapes like the ones you put in your guest room for our study (only in Eden Green) and they are stunning! I’m so happy with the appearance and the quality!

  5. I’m grateful for your wit and authenticity! Especially since my living room is still bear from taking down Christmas. I’m getting a game plan, though, and will be using many of your ideas. Thanks so much for keeping it real.
