Winter Living Room & My Favorite Winter Decor
4 decor elements every room needs to create a warm, cozy, vibrant space for winter and year-round, plus how to add life to a neutral palette.
I walked into HomeGoods the other day and saw spring decor EVERYWHERE (what?) so… maybe your girl here is late to the winter decorating party. Whatever. 😉
Can I tell you a secret though?! Winter and spring decor can totally live together in harmony. There is no rule that says you have to use pine branches and leafless stems in January and February. (There’s also no rule that says you have to follow ANY decor trend. You do you, boo. Decorate with the things that brings you joy!)
Do you know how long it takes to put your house back together after the Christmas decorations come down? Forever and eternity plus one more day and then throw in one more eternity if you also live with a toddler.
But I finally got it together over here, and truth be told, I think our winter living room will transition perfectly into the spring months.
In the past, I’ve been “Team Keep the Evergreens” until March, but this year, I was craving bright leafy green plants alongside cozy candles and a blazing fire.
A warm, inviting atmosphere and a fresh start. That’s all I could ever really want in our home right now after the year we had.
So if you’ve found yourself feeling stuck in how to decorate for the winter months, I hope this helps a little bit.
My Favorite Winter Decor
(Affiliate links are provided below. Full disclosure here.)
1. Candles and Fire
That sounds so awesome. Decorate with FIIIIIIRE! (Cue the maniacal laugh.) But in the dark winter months, there’s nothing that makes our home feel more inviting than a cozy fire and glowing candles.
These are some of my favorites.
2. Green branches and plants
Flowers say “spring” to me, but houseplants are forever. I’ll admit, I don’t have the most green thumb in the world, and I don’t like fighting the dirt-throwing, leaf-picking battle with my 2 year-old anyway (maybe when she’s older). So a few artificial leafy branches in a vase, potted houseplants, and a tree makes a room come to life. Bonus points if you can handle the real kind.
These are some of my favorite faux stems and plants to use in winter or year-round.
3. Use warm, heavy textiles.
I love incorporating wool, faux fur, sweater knit, mohair, velvet and any other soft, warm throw pillows and blankets to curl up with by the fire. It’s the perfect nod to winter. To me, blue and green are the perfect neutral color. They appear in nature year-round in every season, so it can be used in decor year-round too without feeling out of place. When you’re feeling stuck, green and blue are your friends.
4. Say yes to texture.
Woven baskets, raw wood, ceramics, and metallics all add dimension to a room so that it feels inviting. If you have a neutral space that feels “boring” or “cold”, introduce different elements of texture to see if that helps (don’t forget the plants).
I rounded up some of my favorite winter decor items in case you need help adding a cozy vibe to your home. There’s nothing like a few little room changes to make a big impact on your mood in the cold of winter. And maybe, it’ll tie us over just long enough until spring.
