DIY Canopy Crown from a Repurposed Shelf

There have been so many projects in Olivia’s bedroom that made us go spirit fingers crazy.

My inner 4 year-old wanted her DIY ballet barre. I was ready to break out in song over her oversized sheet music art. And yesterday, when Olivia’s little cousins came over to play dress up, we were all basically doing cartwheels.

And this latest DIY canopy that saved us a whopping $250 from the RH Baby and Child version almost tops them all.

I’d been hoping to put up a canopy in Olivia’s room from the beginning, but was not loving the price tag on several I’d found. In Hobby Lobby the other week though, I spotted this cute little shelf and it hit me. I could make it into a canopy crown!

Plus it was on sale at 50% off, and I had a coupon. Bam! Spirit fingers galore.

I picked up sheer Teresia curtains from Ikea and a tension rod too. The entire canopy cost about $45.

Robert set the shelf first into the studs in the center of the wall behind the bed and used a level before placing the screws.

I just slid the sheer curtains onto the tension rod, tightened it underneath the shelf, and that was it.

The whole project took all of 15 minutes.

Olivia’s exact words when she was it were “Ooooh princess!” I think that means she approves.

We hung up curtains on her window while we were at it too.

I spent a bit more than I usually do on curtains for these I found at Target, but it’s so tricky finding the perfect non-Pepto Bismoly pink to coordinate with the bedding, that I did it anyway. They’re nice and full and the fabric is beautiful. So yep. I caved.

I stumbled upon the perfect piece to go above the headboard in Myrtle Beach last week, but you’ll be seeing more of that later. I’m so thrilled about it!

It’s amazing to me how much bigger this window looks from when we first started on this room. DIY molding and curtains are magical!

We still need to add an area rug, but this space is mostly finished!

I’ve debated whether or not to put some framed art on either side of the canopy. But I’m afraid I might be overdoing it then. What do you think? Add framed art or leave the blank spaces? The jury’s still out over here.

In the meantime, Olivia has her first “princess sleepover” as she calls it this week, and her cousins are just as excited about it as she is.

Okay okay, I’m super excited too. I’m all over here like Buddy the Elf thinking, “First, we’ll play tea party for two hours, then we’ll make a blanket fort, then we’ll eat a whole roll of Tollhouse cookie dough as fast as we can, and then we’ll snuggle.” 😉
