20 Best Washable Rugs and Playroom Refresh Progress

The best affordable machine washable rugs to use in a playroom, mud room, kitchen, dining room, or anywhere that gets messy.

This post is sponsored by Walmart.

Washable rugs were definitely the final must-have for the playroom refresh.

I mean… do you see how messy our little crew is from when I took this picture of the playroom two weeks ago?

The small metal chairs were all busted; we had dragged those old armchairs in from our living room since we added a TV; a purge, reorganize, reevaluate storage quest was definitely needed.

Making the Playroom More Functional

It needed love baaaaaaad, and a lot of the original playroom setup that worked for us a few years ago was definitely not functioning now. (Adding a second kid and raising children who never stop growing does that I guess.)

We needed concealed storage, comfy chairs the kids could reconfigure to curl up for a movie, a table where they could color and play games, and a washable rug so we don’t have to worry about art supply messes or snack spills.

It turned out SO much more functional! And now its style and color scheme flows well with the rest of our house.

Choosing the Best Washable Rug

But before calling this Phase 1 officially finished, we tried out 3 washable area rugs from Walmart to see which looked best.

Walmart Home now carries washable rugs so if you have kids, dogs, a messy significant other, or you’re just “graceful” and spill everything yourself (hi, that’s me), you can throw these flat woven rugs into a machine wash on cold, dry flat, and they come out good as new.

Which one is your favorite?

1. Mia Geometric Medallion Rug

I like how the geometric pattern of this Mia area rug contrasts against the ornate tapestry in here.

2. Kamron Rug

The blush tones in this Kamron area rug make the playroom adds some warmth and feels extra feminine, which is great for our girls.

3. Cadarn Machine Rug

This Cadarn area rug compliments the light blue paint color of the cabinets perfectly and the rust detail around the edges works beautifully with the pop of rusty red in the tapestry art!

What’s your vote? Robert’s favorite is the #3 blue patterned rug, which might be the ultimate winner since it does work so well against the tapestry art.

Washable Rug Durability

Whichever one we decide to keep, I’ll definitely report back in a month or so with how it holds up over time. So far, I’m really optimistic.

After owning our Ruggable rugs for over a year and dealing with the edges curling up on us, I don’t predict that being an issue with the Kamron and Cardan rugs especially since they’re designed much like our non-washable flat weave rugs that don’t curl.

But I’ll update this post later if that changes in the future.

The material feels much more like a cotton flat weave, which I prefer, is eco friendly, and is stain resistant. The rugs also don’t require a velcro pad with a rug cover like the other washable rug we have.

We still have to address two other walls in the playroom, but updating the paint color, seating, and DIY light fixture is a huge improvement.

Olivia said, “Mommy, it feels like a girl lounge in here!” And that’s exactly what it feels like.

The girls have already sprawled toys everywhere, pushed chairs together to make a big day bed for movies, and made all kinds of art on the activity table.

And I don’t bat an eye because the rug can be majorly used and abused through all of that and still be easy to clean.

  4. I love the idea of a washable rug, but where do you wash a rug that’s 8X10? Your choices look so pretty, but I’m having a really hard time finding a rug for my living room that has green in it. Help!

  5. the rugs are lovely, but that tapestry!! where did you find it please, thanks so much, annn

  6. These rugs are all pretty! I am wondering how well a 9×12’ rug would fit in a washing machine…maybe if it’s a large capacity machine without an agitator? I would think this it’s washable that it would spot clean pretty well. What kind of rug pad are you using? The room is so pretty and feminine…lucky girls!

  11. Lovely!’ I’m looking for a washable rug for my bathroom right now. Did I miss your post on the tapestry, the curtain rod and rings? Would love to see more about that especially the sources. I’m looking for a thin café curtain rod with matching rings. Thank you!

  12. How will you wash these rugs? They look huge! Will they actually fit in a home washer, or will they have to be taken to a commercial machine?

    1. They’re really thin. You can wash them on cold on the bulky setting like you would a comforter, but you have to use a machine that doesn’t have an agitator.
